It was a bit brighter this morning, 9C, blue skies and the heavy dark clouds of yesterday had given way to a sparser lighter white version.
Whitehorse itself was still an unhappy looking, feeling place. It's a town where people in general seem without much hope, soup kitchens abound and seeing people going through rubbish bins is the norm. There is an over abundance of security cameras so assume the crime rate is high. Yesterday I'd seen drugs openly dealt on the streets.
The main tourist claim to fame, the scenic railway shut down a week ago, I had hoped to do a day trip today but it wasn't to be. Pete thinks the problem was everyone was winding down from the peak tourist season and felt the looming winter was close; a time when work must be hard to get and the cold weather unrelenting for months.
Anyway, we fuelled up and headed back the way we'd come. Like yesterday there was no sign of wildlife unless you count the odd bunny or squirrel bolting across the road. There were few places to stop and check anything out. We did find a nice spot by a river for lunch but facilities like picnic areas are thin on the ground, again we made do with the back of the car as our table to prepare food and a rock beside the river for a seat.
Shortly after we left the Alaska hwy the weather again went against us, heavy dark clouds and light rain. There had been a fire through the forest here and the burnt skeletons of the forest were quite spooky.
We passed numerous smallish lakes, beautiful crystal clear blue water but again access was limited. Once we got to Lake Boya it began to be more like we'd been used to, easier access. Lake Boya had a really nice rec and camping area. If we'd had our kayaks with us this would've been the perfect place to go for a paddle. We stopped at a couple of other rivers and lakes, all beautiful spots.
We checked into our hotel for the night and settled in to check emails, cook dinner etc. then we waited, hoping the clouds would clear so we could again experience the northern lights.
