It was great to celebrate Bastille Day with the French. We didn't plan to be in Paris on this day. It just happened and we feel so lucky to have experienced it. Our hotel was only 5 minutes from the Eiffel Tower. At around 7pm we were having dinner and we saw the crowds starting to swarm to the Champs de Mars to prepare for the Fireworks spectacular. It was like it was Grand Final day at the MCG but three times as many people!
Alcohol was not permitted into the park and bags were checked. In fact, 3 hours before the start of the celebrations, all the shops in the vicinity were not permitted to sell alcohol. This made the night so good. Every inch of the grass was taken up with people. The behaviour of the crowd was fabulous.
It was 10.55pm when darkness fell over the Eiffel Tower and the show started with the tower lighting up to the Disco song 'It's Rainin'g Men'. It then followed with another 6 or 7 disco songs - all well known (Le Freak c'est Chic, I will Survive, Stayin' Alive, YMCA) and in English. I think there was only 2 French language disco songs. So the crowd loved it (as there were many tourists).
I'd have to say it was one of the most spectacular nights I have ever been to. The best things in life are free!
Youtube has got some great footage of the night. Just go to www.youtube.com and search Bastille Day 2012 Fireworks.
