Hey guys, we finally made our way into Australia, after 2 stops on the way in Singapore and Darwin, and the drugs scandal that happened at Cairns airport, when a random swab test showed that both Josh and I had traces of heroin in our bags. Pretty weird, shocking more than anything stuff, but after a frisk search and an xray of both of our backs showing no bags or anything of heroin showed up we were free to go.
So Cairns, generally a nice place, quite clean and a backpackers paradise, so many deals and travel agents targeted at backpackers like us. I think the locals get pretty annoyed as they have to pay normal prices, where we get all sorts of deals, such as we both got free meals each night at the hostel we stayed at. There wasn't too much to do in Cairns itself, its really a base for people to do adventure sports or sightseeing to places outside of Cairns. Lots of scuba diving trips, snorkelling and bungee jumping were available, but we both have decided to go white water rafting at the famous Tully River, which we do tomorrow. We guessed we can snorkel in the reef further down the east coast when we have a bit more time on our hands. The past few days have involved organising our Oz Experience down the east coast to Sydney, and getting our flight dates changed for the rest of the trip.
We celebrated St Paddys day quite moderately compared to the night we had on Friday night, where we got pretty drunk after meeting a local guy called Jason. He took us round some of the bars around Cairns. After a night out he agreed to take us to Port Douglas and other areas around Cairns today, which we grabbed the chance at. Port Douglas is an area full of rich people, so you can imagine it was very nice and we bought an aussie rules ball and had a bit of a kick around for half an hour or so there, just on a park area in front of the beach. After that we drove to a rapid area called Mossman Gorge and had a swim to cool down, which was quite needed.
We go to Tully tomorrow then to raft and stay in Mission Beach to begin our Oz Experience and on tuesday we travel from Mission Beach to Airlie Beach, which is the stop off point for Whitsundays islands, where we plan to have a bit of a sail!
P.S. Its rained LOADS here due to its tropical climate!
