Greeting from NOLA!
Our day started off VERY early, when we left Memphis at 9AM. We drove until we arrived in New Orleans, around 3:30PM. While driving here, we hit some pretty crazy rain but saw some beautiful clouds!
Our first stop in New Orleans was the Louisiana Muesum where they were hosting an exhibit on Katrina & life after. It was very eye-opening & moving to get to see the timeline of all of the events and be up close and personal with what the people of New Orleans had to experience.
After leaving the museum, we decided we wanted to see the rebuilding process for ourselves, so we hopped on the bridge & headed over to the Lower Ninth Ward. Speechless isn't even the appropriate word for what we saw. The streets are ruined, over 70% of the houses lay empty & still damaged from the hurricane years ago. But those who were able to rebuild, did so beautifully. They make the Lower Ninth Ward stand out in its own special way.
After driving through, we headed to our Bed & Breakfast to check in. We are staying in the Garden District (best unintentional choice, ever!). The owners are so sweet & the B&B is AMAZING! We are on the top floor & have two rooms & a private bath. We even have a balcony that overlooks Magazine Street. Nenna & I both agree we are in the safest area we could be in.
After oogling over the B&B and taking pictures, we walked to a local bar to grab a "Po Boy" (native to NOLA). We walked in to a crowd watching the Saints game, so we made ourselves at home. We ate cheese Po Boys & fries and felt right at home with the rest of the natives around us. Many people even brought their dogs into the bar, dressed in Saints jerseys!
After eating, we walked to a local cemetary to find that it was closed. Nenna was still able to take some pretty awesome shots through the gate. Then, we walked back to our B&B, got in the car & headed for Cafe Du Monde (recomended by my mama).
We settled in at the Cafe & shared a beignet. It was quite delicious, especially being fresh (mom, you were right!) We didn't hang here long because we had to get postcards & gifts across the street. After buying all of our goodies, we drove through Bourbon Street.
After getting all sorts of lost we finally made it back to the B&B! We headed inside when a black cat crossed our path. We both hurried inside only to have the cat FOLLOW US IN! [Note: This cat does not live or belong to any one in the B&B] So Nenna was making noises at him while I grabbed an umbrella to try and scare him out. After a few minutes, he gave up & ran out the door.
Now here we sit, getting ready for bed and the LONG drive ahead of us tomorrow. We will be departing NOLA between 8-9AM to head off to Dallas, TX to stay with my cousin Eric & his family. We are excited to get the oppourtunity to spend time with them & eat Texas barbeque!
Check back tomorrow for another update!
Love + miss you!

HEEY!!
