Breakfast at 9am which presented us with the delights of polenta and layers of melted cheese. Certainly the way to start the day!
Laszlo picked us up at the apartment and drove us to the long grass field with snails (the same one we visited on the second day). The field was once used as a football field but was abandoned. The land now belongs to the council but Laszlo's organisation, AGORA, are working on the field for free. Which is what we were to do today! Our task was to cut the long, free standing grass to the ground (or pull it out completely) and pile it up. Kate and I did that while Michael, Simon and Laszlo raked the hay grass into piles. This allows a variety of grass species to grow and create a species-rich grassland. We found loads of snails while cutting and raking so made a 'snail haven' for them in the corner of the field.
During our break, Simon saw a Lesser Spotted Eagle circling the sky. It was spectacularly big with a wing span of about two metres and an impressive display of feathers. Flying next to it was a Goshawk which was so much smaller in comparison!
At 2pm we stopped work as the weather became unbearably hot. We bought some rosehip tea from a shack of a bar just down the road. It looked like it was the kind of place where people went and never escaped again. So we made a quick exit from there and headed back to the apartment. Laszlo once again kindly provided us with a picnic lunch in a hamper, full of fresh and delicious food. More pate, salami, bright red radishes and spring onions. Mmm!
Kate settled down for her daily afternoon nap after feasting. While she snoozed, Michael, Simon and I strolled into town for a little explore. We discovered a shop which looked like an Easter shop from the outside as it had a colourful display of chicks and eggs in the window. It turned out to be a treasure trove for trinkets and tacky gifts! I knew most of the stuff was not made in Romania, but I couldn't resist buying a candle and a decorative dish since they were both as cheap as chips. We then headed up the main street in search of a post office for Simon, who wanted to dispose of his postcards to England. On the way, we found a lovely jewellery bead shop which had a myriad of bead designs and craft material. I thought of Kate while we were in there as she used to own a bead shop herself!
We hiked up the hill in the centre of town to the Catholic Church which had a huge, well kept graveyard. Most of the headstones were lovingly cared for and were located on terraces up the hill. The landscaping gave the graveyard a rather majestic and spacious feel. Some of the headstones were quite ostentatious and were most likely for the rich folk of Odorheiu. We found a couple of crypts which we tried to get into but were disappointingly locked. We couldn't believe we were in a graveyard in Transylvania!
We returned just in time for dinner to find Kate awake and perky. Our evening meal took place in Select, where we had goulash pork with grated potato. It was delicious and filled a hole in my stomach!
On to the G Point Bar where we watched a Slovakian band play, as part of the town's world music festival. They were a very lively bunch, with a female lead singer who had a piercing voice! They definitely created a buzzing atmosphere. Laszlo's friend Janos joined us for a bit. He looked a little like Indian Jones and had tales from America as he had lived there for part of his life. At one point in the evening, Kate and I turned around to see him massaging Simons knee! We later found out that Janos is actually the town's masseuse and was trying to relieve ongoing tension in Simon's leg. The evening continued until late; we eventually skipped home for a quick snack of bread and cheese and then tumbled into bed.
