The city of canals and bridges, of Gondolas and as I experienced flooding.... Yes Venice floods around 90 days per year. We arrived late in Venice after a long day of driving. We hit Venice Island early on Tuesday morning catching a bus from the outskirts where we were living, into the heart of gondola country.
In Venice when it floods, temporary walkways similar to camp stretches with wooden tops are run throughout the effected areas - shops sell gumboots and knee high plastic moon boot covers to add some glamour!
After wandering through the main sites in Venice it was off to a glass demonstration where in 15 seconds the master glass maker turned a blob of glass into a horse standing on its hind legs! We later found out that it takes glass makers 10 years at college to perfect their trade!
Gondolas next to cruise the canals and check out the Rialto Bridge and experience the working Venice. Garbage Gondolas exist and so do Gelato Gondolas! The afternoon was all ours and after being told the best way to experience Venice is to tuck your maps away and just get lost we really go to experience the real Venice. Out of the hundreds of gorgeous bridges in Venice we would have ticked most of them off as we wandered aimlessly admiring the middle eastern inspired architecture, narrow cobbled streets and shopfronts selling murano glass, masks, nutella crapes, Gelato, Pizza and lace. We experienced the Vaporettos as we made our way back to St Marcs Square to exchange some Euros to Kunos before settling down to a long dinner in one of the local Piazzas.
Today we are off through Slovenia to Krk Island in Croatia!
