After saying goodbye to Venice it was hello to Croatia after a short stop over in Slovenia to visit the Postojna Caves. Postojna Caves is the second longest cave system in the world, measuring in at 20km of tunnels and tunnels. The cave visit involves a train ride through the main tunnell into the middle of the cave system which permanently sits at around 8 degrees - yes it was time for termals. After walking through the caves for around an hour on a guided tour it was back on the train and back out to a much warmer 12 ish degrees :) PS the best Pizza all trip was at the Postojna Caves in Slovenia....who knew!
We got back on the bus and crossed the boarder into Croatia. The coastline of Croatia even in winter is picturesk. We arrived to then hotel nestled 50 metres from the water and quickly checked into our rooms. An important lesson learnt as we arrived to Croatia was that it completely shuts down in winter....the rooms smelt like they had already been shutup for weeks and not cleaned from the last visitors and many of the local attractions/eateries were closed. It didn't help that our free day in Croatia fell on the 31st October where all of Croatia shuts to celebrate the Day of the Dead.
So it was off to the local supermarket as soon as we arrived to stock up on some food for our free day and some drinks for Halloween that night! Fi had told me about Honey Liqueur - its make it Croatia and its her favourite local drink. Its been a week since I have tried it but I still cringe at typing the description....its nasty! Needless to say me next learning was that sleeping on the top bunk bed when your pissed is not the best idea :)
We dropped the pace in Croatia due mainly to everything being closed for the public holiday but also due to the massive storm system that swept through Europe. The day prior to arriving in Venice the water had been ankle deep in most places, the day we were in Croatia we found out the water was thigh deep in the same places.
Onwards to Ljubljana!
