My time in Italy didn't exactly go to plan. With the expected flu hitting in Barcelona, my free week off tour to slow things down was going to be spent between Florence, Cinque Terre and Pompeii. I did slow things down and ended up staying in Florence and heading down to Rome a day early.
My day trip out of Florence to check out San Gimignano, Pisa and Sienna was fantastic - check out Walk About Florence on Trip Advisor - fantastic way to head out and experience Tuscany. The morning started with a visit to Sienna -a visit to the worlds oldest bank, the Duomo and a coffee in the Piazza del Campo - home to the famous Palio horserace!
On the way to San Gimignano we stopped off for a couple of hours at a Tuscan Chianti Vineyard - lunch was 95% grown on the farm (everything except the cheese). After a four course fabulous Italian lunch with matched wines, we headed off to the hilltop tower town of San Gimignano - home of the worlds best GELATO! San Gimignano was enchanting, exploring cobbled allies with panoramic views over the rolling hills of Tuscany.
Late afternoon was a visit to Pisa for corny Leaning Tower photos and a drive around Pisa's historic port district in mini trains. Then it was back to Florence for a late dinner and glass of wine before packing up ready to fast train it down to Rome the following morning.
