Spending my last classes today in an incredibly hot classroom was more than worth it. Just like the other two months I have spend in Stellenbosch.
Today we were havin' a discussion about what problems South-Africa has and has the greatest difficulty dealing with. Education, poverty, abuse, crime, HIV/Aids and the unemployment rate were all aspects of the discussion. Our tutor asked what the most important aspect was to be treated of all the problems listed. I immediately said 'Education' because I feel that a good quality education forms the fundamentals of an economically, politically and socially strong nation. Also, I feel that through the use of good quality education, all the other problems listed can be solved; even poverty.
I sometimes have felt as if the work I was doing was of no importance, but as we all know, the little things that count the most and today this feeling got emphasized once again by the head of the Political Science Department. "Even if you have made one girl smile, who has led a horrible life before you arrived, you have already made a difference". It was great to hear this and I felt incredibly rewarded and thankful for the compliment that had just been made.
Australia is comin' up in a few days and although I feel excited to leave I wouldn't have mind to stay longer. It is a small world, that's what I've learned from South-Africa; I have met loads of people from all over the world: Namibia, England, Ecuador, Mozambique, Germany, France, Sweden, and Botswana are all represented by people of relatively high intelligence.
My largest concern within the continent of Africa remains education. When we look at the stats, the unemployment rate of the amount of people willing and able to work is between 30 - 40%. In europe, any given country is in a national crisis when the stats hit 10%. It is easy to make problems but to find solutions for them is far more difficult. Some people tend to have a desire for making problems and this is something which I have started to despise.
If every country in the world would give 1% of their National Product away there would not be any poverty in the world. This is a scary thought and I think it might be something that can be realized somewhere in the near future. I hope that Africa will gain strength, for it does not only deserve it, I think it has the power for it, but not without the help of others - foreign and wealthier countries.
Talk to you guys in Ozzy....
