Hi guys,
This is my first real day at Stellenbosch University, and I can tell you, it's 33 degrees outside and there is a lovely atmosphere!! Stellenbosch is a really protected town full of students who are all very kind. On my way to Stellenbosch I already saw some disturbing things, the townships. Next to the road where I was driving were hundreds of self-made tent like houses, without a sewer or anything.
A remarkable sight, because just a few miles away from here absolute chaos, corruption and death rule. The, so to speak, nice thing is that I will be working there, mainly at a school, which is called Hector Peterson High School.
A short description of Hector Peterson High School:
A relatively new state school in a very poor part of the district, this
school is run by a very progressive and dynamic Principle, to such a
degree that within the short time it has been open the school is running
at almost twice its capacity!
The principle is incredibly grateful for the assistance gap students bring
as his team of staff Educators are working at capacity. He is very
willing to adapt your experience here at the school to your interests and
experiences. Previous students roles have ranged from a very hands on
approach (repairing desks and building desks for the new computer labs) to
teaching Spanish, Economics and Travel and Tourism. School starts at 8 and
finishes at 2, after which if volunteers are interested, you can get
involved in after school activities/sports. The last group also sorted a
container load of donated books by barcoding and cataloguing them into the
library.
This project will provide a tremendous number of learning experiences,
particularly for those wishing to go into teaching. You will need to be
prepared to use your imagination and come up with ideas and suggestions
once you're at the schools in ways you feel you can help.
As a volunteer you will work here at the school for 2/3 days a week.
I'll post a new message in a few weeks from now!!
