A bit of a sleep in (9 am brekkie!) before we met Bill and headed over to the Millennium Stadium, the home of rugby. It’s an impressive stadium which can seat 74,500 people! There are a few cool things about the stadium, first off, it’s got a roof. It takes 20 minutes to open and close, and we were hopeful that we’d get to see it in action (as it’s often closed when it starts to rain), but alas we were out of luck. There are over one million bolts holding the stadium together, 25% alone are in the fancy pants roof.
The next thing we thought was a bit nifty was the grass, which is brought in piece by piece, 7,412 pieces of 1 m square turf to be exact! It takes four days and 100 lorries to remove, but ten days to put back in. And the cost? 83,000 pounds. So you want to get it right the first time....
After various ‘bird poo in my beer’ stories the folks at the Millenium Stadium decided to do something about the birds nesting in the roof. The solution was to bring hawks in daily (which apparently love KFC, little fact for ya) and in the five years they’ve been using them only one bird has attempted to make its home there.
Our final stop in Cardiff was to take a gander around the castle. As Cardiff is predominantly flat the castle sits surrounded by the city, and is easy to walk to, with no steep hills to climb, apart from one part of the castle where they built a small man made hill for it to nestle on.
The castle has been around for over 2000 years, first built by the Romans and then added to and restored over the years. Invading armies couldn’t storm or tear down the castle as the walls were far too thick and it was therefore impossible. They had a whole host of tricks to takeover including setting up camp outside and not allowing any food in the castle, contaminating the water supply or catapulting things over the walls. Some of their catapult options included dead bodies that had the plague, dead animals, or lime, which could blind people.
It was now time to head to London, our final destination on the epic Bangers and Mash tour of the UK. We headed to the Spaceships depot and bid adieu to our awesome transport, but not before a detour through Slough to see where The Office is filmed!
Discovered the London Underground and headed to the Umi Hotel in Bayswater. Then it was off to Covent Garden to sample some good old English beer and cider with friends. The perfect send off to a magnificent tour.
