Glasgow has turned it on for us since the moment we arrived! Sunny skies, funky accents and fun-loving folks. Took a walk down the 'Style Mile' (Buchanan Street) where the buskers were out in force, everything from 5-piece bands, to Scots with bagpipes, kids break dancing, and slick moves with footballs. The place is swarming with people, to the point where we asked ourselves what the occasion could be, but it's simply the usual Saturday shopping crowds in Glasgow. Apparently the only city which surpasses Glasgow in the shopping stakes is London, so we're in good hands.
Our first stop today was Che Camille, a boutique fashion store with a twist. Not only can you buy the most amazing clothes and jewellery, you can also have clothes made to order, watch the seamstresses at work, listen to the laid back beats of the store DJ or in our case, climb the roof to watch the city heaving below and get our photos taken by Camille herself. She's a New Yorker whose love with the guy she followed here has since died but her passion for the city, fashion and her customers lives on. She encourages us to try on the masterful headpieces - hats and headbands made of feathers and ribbons, and expertly crafted with a price tag to match (all around the 200 pound mark!). With a camera slung round her neck she gets us into model poses, then it's the boys turn and they don the beautiful headpieces, pick up our handbags and channel their feminine side! It's only going on facebook boys…no biggie. Camille is easily the coolest shop keeper I have ever met.
Dinner tonight was at the fabulous Maggie May on Albion St, a brilliant venue recommended by our hotel staff and right next door. Meals were second to none with the boys trialing the haggis (a resounding success and a consensus that we have a version of shepherds pie on our hands), some healthy looking salads, and a few pots full of mussels. The mussels were fab but New Zealand mussels are easily the biggest and tastiest in the world, no qualms about it.
Maggie May comes highly recommended from us for the fab food, the fantastic and very accommodating staff and the awesome live band. This bar/restaurant/nightclub has won plenty of awards for being one of the coolest bars in all of Scotland, awards which they definitely deserve. The crowd is great, making you feel as though you're in the midst of a musical revolution with plenty of cool muso types with 70s hair and outfits. The toilet door signs are worth a look too - John Lennon on the men's and Yoko Ono on the women's.
With the jetlagged Fletch, Vaughan, Will, Stace and Tom off to bed, us STA Travel troops endeavored a few more ciders to celebrate Day one on the Bangers and Mash tour and then hit the hay. Ready for day two - William Wallace escapades and wicked whiskey plus plenty more. Stay tuned!
