Bye bye Glasgow and onto Liverpool! The four hour drive was a beaut, rolling fields, little brick houses, and even snow on the peaks of the distant mountains. In Spring! Crazy.
We dropped our stuff at the funky Parr St hotel which doubles as a recording studio, and where many huge bands have recorded. Then it was onto the Beatles Story an awesome exhibition showcasing the story of four guys called John, Paul, Ringo and George who took the world by storm in the 60s and 70s! The place is set out to replicate the places that were important to the band such as the music shop where they bought their guitars and The Cavern where they played over 292 gigs in only two years! The audio guide recounts their rise to fame plus there's bits and pieces to read, photographs of the group, their fans, their influences and loved ones, and memorabilia. An absolute must if you're visiting Liverpool.
Then it was a dash to the Mersey Ferry, the most famous in the world. Vaughan serenaded us with the song... 'take the ferreeeeey, across the merseeeeey'. The ferry is a great way to see the waterfront, a cool mix of old and new architecture, while getting the rundown of the important buildings and the city's history.
Next stop was the John Lennon's White Feather exhibition, a touching showcase of photos, postcards generally showing Lennon's life before Yoko Ono. We learnt that 'Hey Jude' was originally 'Hey Jules' written for Lennon's son Julian by Paul McCartney when he learned of the divorce. It was written in only a 50 minute drive it took to get to their house.
In the same building is the Fab 4D experience which was to be honest pretty fab. It's basically a short movie shown in 3D (to rival Avatar in terms of its 3D-ness - you feel like you can literally touch what comes out of the screen at you) plus there some extra elements thrown in to give you the 4D experience (won't tell, don't want to ruin the surprise!).
You can get tickets to the Beatles Story, White Feather and Fab 4D experience for only 12.95 pounds for the three.
Our final stop in Liverpool was the infamous Cavern Club, a reconstruction of the original, and a definite highlight of the day. It's a small place with brick arches, apparently it used to get so hot in there during a gig that the condensation would be dripping off the ceiling! Nice! Amazing atmosphere though and the John Lennin lookalike certainly added to that (he also sounded very like him - he would've made a great Stars in their Eyes contestant). Sampled a few ciders and got our groove on!
Great day in Liverpool!
