Take the time out to enjoy the view…
Tuesday was all about taking in the view of Makati and Manila. My Hotel, The BSA Suites has everything I could need; a kitchen, comfortable bed, cable TV, air conditioning and most notable, the pool and gym that is located on the roof of the high-rise building.
Taking some time out I headed to the gym and pool. The gym has two treadmills (one broken) some weights and an exercise bike, all I really need.
As I ran on the treadmill over looking Manila I looked out at the view stretching far to the towering mountains on the other side of the island, to the right the bustling metropolis and straight ahead water stretching around the city. That was one of the many moments that I felt I had to pinch myself. I can't believe I am in Manila!
After a refreshing swim I headed to the Australian embassy where I was briefed on security and media in Manila. Paul Barker, the Manager of Security Services was an Aussie who had been living in the Philippines for 18 years he had some great (yet alarming) stories but gave a lot of advice of how to keep myself safe.
I also was privileged enough to have a one on one meeting with the head of mission, Andrew Byrne (I got the opinion he was quite important!) and his political secretary Will Robinson. Both were very nice and excited about my opportunity in Manila. And Matt and myself were personally invited to a bunch of different events happening during 'Australia Day Week' in Manila. J
I also got a taste of culture! I visited the Yuchengco Museum in Makati City. It was a blend of Philippine and Chinese art, which is referred to as the 'Sino-Filipino Expression'. There were some really nice portraits and sculptures (I'll try to put up some pictures).
All before wrapping up the day with a beautiful dinner and an Australian cocktail in the greenbelt garden, lit up by candles and soft fairy lights (as well as the shine from my computer as you get free Wii-fi in most restaurants). Not a bad way to spend the day…
From Manila lots of love,
Stace
