Returned to the nearby restaurant for breakfast, this time taking the laptop, as they have free wifi! J chose fish & chips! L&M hotcakes with maple syrup & condensed milk, D eggs a la Mexicana - all delicious! After eating, we set off to explore the town, first heading to the main square, to wander around the stalls of the street market that surrounds the local church. Then we walked east, to climb the hill up to Christo Rey, with its church & huge statue of Jesus, with arms outstretched (Give us a hug Jesus!). After sheltering from the sun in the shade of the church for a while, we descended the hill, & found a round, conical, thatched restaurant at the bottom, where we cooled down & had cold drinks. On chatting with the waitresses, we discovered that the local archaeological site (Los Toriles) was only a 20 to 30 minute walk, following the road straight, eastwards, out of town.
We strolled in the sunshine, stopping briefly to buy water on the way, & were soon at the ruins. It turned out that because today was a holiday, entrance was free(!), & we spent the next hour exploring the site. The highlight is a round temple with five staircases, & walls built so that they have cross shaped openings in them. We then walked back into town, reclaimed our washing from the laundrette, & headed back to the room to rest & cool down. As we had been told that the shops would be shut tomorrow, we went for a walk around town to stock up on water, fruit & bakery, just in case it was impossible to eat out.
For tea, we went to a seafood restaurant by the central church, where J ate octopus tostadas, D prawn empanadas, L chose steak & M scrambled eggs! On our way back to the room, we were tempted by a market stall selling large ring doughnuts, & then settled down in front of the TV (The Sixth Day) before going to sleep.
