Friday, the 1st of September
Last night was one of the most uncomfortable nights of our lives, spent on an overnight train from Venice to Vienna, which left at nine at night and arrived in Vienna 8.30 the next day. We tried to sleep in a small cabin with four other people, where the seats would extend into a mattress type thing where six of us were cramped up on. We were interrupted every couple of hours by people repeatedly checking our tickets and passports. Finally we arrived at the hostel at 9 in the morning, only to be told we weren't able to check in until 3! We waited around the hostel fell asleep in the hostel common room and bummed around until we were finally able to check in. We slept for a few hours and made friends with our new roomates, Dan and Tom from Manchester, and Josh from Sydney, who joined us for a few beers.
Saturday, the 2nd of September
Today was also a very unproductive day, as we were still catching up on the lack of sleep from the nights before. We went food shopping, and did half a weeks grocery shopping for four euro, everything here is very cheap compared to Australia. We went for a little explore around our area, and that night went to a travelers bar which organized pub crawls for backpackers to meet each other. The bar was great, had really good music and even sold vegemite! Unfortunately the pub crawl was cancelled so we went on an unofficial pub crawl with all the other backpackers wishing to go, was a great way to meet other travelers!
Sunday-Friday
During the week we did a bit of sightseeing, but was made a bit difficult because Bonnie has injured her foot so we have also spent a bit of time sitting in parks picnicking and taking advantage of the extremely cheap beer (3.50 for a 6 pack of half liter bottles!) it has been really great relaxing and trying to save a bit of money by living of bread and cheese and boreks (huge spinach and cheese turkish pastries- will fill you up the whole day for only two euro!). We have been practicing our ukelele and harmonica a lot too, in hope of getting a bit good and maybe busking for food money! We did hire bikes one day and cycle around the city, you can ride for an hour for free, drop it off at another bike station, ride again for free etc.. We also visited the Sigmund Freud museum which was quite exciting, even though it had more pictures of him as a kid and old hats then information on how he developed his theories, it was still pretty cool to visit his old house and practice. Vienna is a beautiful city, probably the most livable I have been to so far, they have a big going out culture which is what we missed while in Italy, and the price of food and groceries is just insanely cheap compared to Australia. Will continue to try to update the blog more regularly :)
