Where was I? I can't quite remember, but I think we were in Dubai Airport. Well we were there for a few hours, shattered, wandering the monstrously large airport as wee went to and fro to gate 121 where there was an Irish pub and a smoking room. We finally got on the plane, where we ate about the fourth airline meal (all nice) in 10 hours and I tried to sleep, but couldn't because I kept getting bashed on the shoulder (the woes of an aisle seat).
We finally arrived in Bangkok 6 hours later having not slept for nearly today's now. We jumped in a taxi and took the nearly your long trip to our hotel, Erawan Hostel just off the kho San road, thank god for air con cos when we got there it was bloody hot, like crazy hot, and humid, and id forgotten the smell, something like dust and rubbish which u just get used to.
Our little hotel was lovely, although there were four flights of stairs to get to our room, again, thank god for air con! It cost about THB850 for the night, and was on a lovely little side road. Room nice and clean, beds wonderfully comfortable.
We decided to head straight out, so after a quick change into something less boiling hot, we went for a mooch about. We ate some lovely simple curry at a street restaurant for about THB60 and washed it down with a beer from the shop. Heaven.
We'd finished when a little old history teacher came over and asked if he could sit down with us for a chat, which he did. His name was Dang and he was down for a couple of days buying uniforms for his students in Chiang Mai where it is much more expensive. We finished our beers as he chatted away and said our goodbyes shortly afterward, a lovely little meeting.
We headed back to the hotel then, I was close to heat stroke, the mix of no sleep, poor dehydration (not helped by having beers wines and spirits on the plane) and extreme heat just proving too much. Home, a liter of cold water and a good snooze was called for. This was 12.30.
At 5 we got up. Too late for any sight seeing, we had a shower, got up and went out for a walk. Ahhh there was a breeze blowing through the streets of Bangkok.
We went for a walk by the river and watched some authentic street performers, dancers, singers and the like which was pretty great. We sat by the river, and yet again met a little man who was a history teacher who told us all about the recent floods in Bangkok and how it had changed the city, he showed off some history knowledge and pointed out some sights. He wanted to take us to a Thai market, but as we walked with him I suspected a scam and made our excuses.
We went to the khao san road after a bit of searching, just to have a look at all out commercial Bangkok. I do love that little road, so bustling with every nationality that flocks to this part of the world. Food vendors on little carts, street stalls and markets, ping pong touts all over the shop, we were still tired, and wanted a rest. So we waded back to our neck of the woods.
We went to a lovely little street restaurant and ate way too much. Spring rolls, pork on fried bread, chicken pad Thai and chicken middle in Tom yum soup were all delicious when washed down with a jug of Chang beer. It had been a busy few days, and at 10.30, we decide to call it a night. Tomorrow was where it was all really beginning, and I'm not a massive fan of Bangkok anyway. Home to watch a little Telly while I fall asleep in my comfy bed, fed, watered and ready for sleep.
