Ahh well yesterday was a much better day!
6th March is where we got our sightseeing mojo back.
We got up early and our slightly crazy landlady at the Bifern Homestay made us a breakfast of fried eggs on toast, with fresh juice and coffee. We set off from the hostel about 8am and got a THB100 tuk tuk to the train station where we got a THB30 train ticket to nearby Lopburi. This is the town overrun by monkeys.
We got off the train and there was the usual uncertainty of we're the he'll do we go and where the hell are all the monkeys?? We wondered around past some various wat ruins which we ignored cos we wanted to see the blooming monkeys. We were also being stalked by scary this German man, who clearly had no idea where he was going, I on the other hand had taken a photo of a map on my phone so I knew a rough route, ha! No chance of spending the day aimlessly wandering around like yesterday!
All of a sudden we rounded a corner and we saw the monkeys, and they were everywhere! It was a bit like one of those magic eye puzzles, one you saw one they were everywhere, on the pavements, under the cars, ontop of crates outside shops, on the power lines, on the buildings, monkeys monkeys monkeys!!
We then went to monkey temple where there we just hundreds of them. It was about THB50 to get in and we followed a small group which consisted of some shrill Europeans and one annoying man who kept swatting and the monkeys for taking the food he was giving them.
The highlight had to be when David asked me to take a photo of him. I told him to sit down on the steps and two younger monkeys immediately saw him as a climbing frame. One jumped on his head, while the other went straight for the backpack.
David stood up, understandable a bit unsure of what do to next as they weren't budging. He jiggled about a bit and they jumped off. Phew!
We hung around for a little while effort going back to the station to catch the train home.
Back at the station we hired an air con taxi THB200 per hour to drive us round some of the temples. Wat Mahathat was a highlight as it had that weird Buddha face that a tree had started to grow around.
After a couple of hours exploring temples we called it a day. We were boiled and hungry, we'd not eaten since breakfast. Back to the hotel for a beer and some food. Red chicken curry for me, green for David cooked by our bonkers landlady who'd kept saying what a good cook she was. And she was, it was delicious.
A few Chang beers later about 10pm we headed for bed. It had been a loooong day!
So that brings me to today, where I currently sit on the 6 hour train trip to Phitsanulok where we get a coach onto Sukhothai. But more on that later.
