We caught a bus down from Sao Paulo to Boicucunga which is one of many beaches in the Sao Sebastiao district. The whole area is full of Brazilians on their holidays, so literally know one spoke English. We stayed in a little hostel which was about 500m from the beach which was stunning. The first of many beaches so you can imagine our excitment :)
Although the hostel was very small we managed to meet some people - Brazilian men wearing speedos who insisted on speaking at us in Portugese despite the fact we clearly didn´t understand one word. It was very funny, we have found that people try and find one thing in common with you such as The Beatles or someone famous and just launch into conversation. Our portugese isn´t great, i´m not going to lie but we are picking up the necessary words, we also have a habit of just putting our thumbs up and saying muito bon - very good when we think we understand something we´ve been said.
So after our first day on the beach, both Kate and Lorna managed to burn the back of their legs, i however somehow managed to catch a bit of sun without burning - amazing i know! We also didn´t realise how high the water would come up so we managed to get everything soaking wet when a big wave hit.
I´m loving swimming in the sea, and its even funnier when Lorna gets knocked down by the tiniest of waves.
We left Boicucunga and headed down to the main town of Sao Sebastiao. As Brazil is so amazingly green (which i was not expecting - everywhere i turn i see green, it really is beautiful) the journey sent the bus through the mountains, meaning very windy roads. This was NOT fun for me as i developing some serious travel sickness. I thought i was going to pass out during the journey, so i was very happy when we arrived in Sao Sebastiao (where i was infact sick haha).
The people here are so unbelieveably amazing and friendly, everyone wants to help us all the time. When we got off the bus in Sao Sebastiao we really didnt have a clue where our hostel was so we stopped a little woman who was selling food and drink on the street to ask her. Despite her not knowing where it was either, she left her stand with her friend and with us trailing behind with our backpacks she walked around asking people and took us right to the front door and gave us kisses goodbye. I cannot get over how nice people are, its such a nice way of life - i really am getting used to it.
Soon after arriving, we went and caught a ferry boat across the sea to a little island called Ilha Bella - it really is in the name, beautiful island! Although we went on a cloudy day we walked around this island in awe. All you could see was the sea with a backdrop of mountains that were up in the clouds. It felt like we were walking on air a bit haha!!
We decided we wanted to find one of the many natural waterfalls that are on the island and started what should of been a very uphill struggle. However, we stopped to ask some locals (we are getting very good at stopping and asking people where the hell we are meant to be going - its very easy as we just put our hands up and point in all different directions and just this way, this way or this way - people do tend to laugh at us a lot!) anyway...after stopping some locals who´s reaction was pure shock at us suggesting to walk to this waterfall named Toca that they brought round their van and a nice man (who we have named Pedro) drove us there. Thank g-d he did beacuse it took 20mins in the car, i dred to think what the walk would of been like haha!
Once at the top of the mountain, we were all geared up for seeing some beautiful spring, but before we could i was attacked and violated by mosquitos. I could actually see the little b*****s drawing blood from me ankles - i got about 22 bites in 3 mins! So i ran away from the waterfall, with Lorna and Kate behind. Was a shame not to see the falls but i wasn´t having that many bites for it no way lol!!
After spending the night in Sao Sebastiao we got an early bus to a little colonial town to PARATY!!!
