Hi Sian, Kay sent me a link to your blog! Glad your having a good time - can't believe this is the first year in eight when i'm not there!! I'm going to copy you an e mail I sent to a mate whos going to Rio today - its a bit 'Gay' but hey everything is in Rio - and may have some things worth doing - If you go to Sambodromo go tommorow - on Sunday - its fantastic and Beija Flor are always really great as are Grande Rio! The first division schools go on Sunday and Monday. Do go to Santa Teresa and Cento where is your hostel? - Ipanema has the nicest neighbourhood scene on the streets especially around Farme de Amoedo and Vincius se morais - Both running at right angles off the beach. Copacabana is a bit touristy and trashy and the other neighbourhoods Flamengo Botofogo and Centro only have pockets of street life and Leblon is a bit sedate!. Are you going to Iguassu and Salvador? Also the Cidades Historicos in Minas Gerais are really fantastic - Ouro Preto Tiradentes and Sabara - you can fly cheaply with www.voegol.com.br or Tam to Belo Horizonte and go from there! Its the perfect tonic after the madness of carnival! Have fun! God I wish I was there! michael.xx
