As i mentioned in my last blog, we arrived in La Paz early in the morning! It was not fun having to wait for our room from 6am until 1pm when we hadn´t sleep but the hostel was soooo amazing so it was nice to explore! They hired out hair dryers FREE OF CHARGE, o the smile on my face haha!! Got us a bit of time on the computers, watched a few films, hit up breakfast and well..before we knew it it was 1pm!
The hostel we stayed in is called WILD ROVER and it is by far the best hostel we have stayed in so far! I LOVED this place so much i actually can´t explain! It´s Irish run and it´s the perfect size, not too big and not too small, i actually felt part of a family out here! We both loved it and the people so much that we ended up staying for 8 days...ooops!
We did however get a bit of a shock when we moved into our room...after travelling for so long from the salt flats and having not had showers in a few days...we were totally out of it!! We were just slumped on one bed when a bunch of people came in and asked us it would be ok if they did a line of coke in the room! they asked because they didn´t want to offend us...we both just looked at each other and were like ermm yer fine do what you gotta do! that was our welcome to la paz! do not worry...we didnt go near the stuff, got more sense than that!!
So our first day we spent pretty much exhausted. We werén´t too affected by the altitude following the salt flats so we went for a walk to the markets...Bolivia is full of Markets!
All the women here have a very odd dress code also, it´s very dated! They all wear knee high flesh coloured socks with black sandals and frumpy skirts to the knee and then big jumpers. The most noticeable is their hair, all the women have long long dark hair which is always done in two plaits and then tied at the bottom and a boiler hat! They all carry everything on their back in these colourful blankets and they are all rather small and fat!
Anyway...we had been warned about La Paz and i can honestly say it was the messiest week of my life! We made such amazing friends here! We spent the first few nights with a bunch of Australian guys all who were amazing! Most clubs in La Paz are very small, and most are illegal! Well the ones that open at 4am for the after parties are! The clubbing scene didn´t start until about 1.30am so there was always pre-drinking in the bar of the hostel which is so cute and pub like! Spent most of our time here chatting with the bar staff who are AMAZING! lovee you guyyys!!
Anyway, on our second night out i experienced my first illegal club called BLUE! I loved the music and i was gratful for the chance to just dance. Everyone wanted to go to the famous of all famous illegal drug den clubs called route 36 so i let them go and i stayed in BLUE with the bar staff dancing the night away. No desire to sit and watch a bunch of people take coke around me, no thanks! anyway...we were dancing until 7am when we went to a little 24hr cafe for some munch! I got in at 9am that morning, to find that loads of friends i have met along the way had arrived in the hostel! As i was a little typsy i was very over excited and didn´t find my way to bed until 10am...and of course you never get any sleep in hostel so i was up by 1pm grrr!!
La Paz has this rather strange but unique market called the witches market where they sell all the usual clothes and everything but they also sell lama feotuses and all kinds of other disgusting stuff...was a very strange experience! In my exhausted state me and kate hit up the market...i had to buy some new clothes as everything is recked and just doesnt fit! I got me two pairs of funky trousers, an alpaca jumper, leg warmers, hat and gloves all for 15 pound, bargin i reckon! And i love my trousers, one pair is purple and the other is multi-coloured!! :) very funky!
Everynight was a big night in La Paz, people say it´s soul destroying and i can totally see why now, during the day everyone is either in bed or up having not gone to bed and for those who are awake after a sleep look demoralised and very pale from the alcohol consumption haha!!
Everynight consisted of pre-drinking at the bar, vodka sunrise was my drink if you wanted to know and well just general fun at the bar!! I got on like a house on fire with the bar staff..got offered a job there but cant take it sadly..but would love to!!
Every night their is something going on in La Paz, its a crazy crazy place i tell you btu we had the best time! We were meant to only go for 4 days or so and we ended up staying 8...can´t believe it!
There wasn´t one night out that i got home before 6.30am, I was living off no sleep and as it was Passover most of the time we were there no bread either which made life that bit more difficult! We were there over easter weekend, and the hostel threw a dressing up party! Me and Kate we ridiculously excited at this (we do love to dress up as many of you know) and raided the dressing up cupboard with two Irish girls (Jenny and Nadia). In keeping with the theme, we decided we would go as Chicks! We hired in more irish girls, Jamie and Sandra to help us with costume fun and we spent the entire day in the girls budoire getting ready, playign music and having a giggle! Was such fun!
That night with us two dressed as chicks, Jenny as the easter bunny and Nadia as well...god we tore up the bar! The bar staff were also dressed up as chickens, angels, bunnies and some strange creature...everyone else flopped but we looked amazing!
All along the way we´ve met the most amazing people, and everyone seemed to be in the same hostel and that time so we were loving it!
That night was the only downfall to La Paz as i had my drink spiked which wasn´t a pleasant experience, i lost my eye sight for a few hrs and was throwing up for 16 hours...and then when i eventually made it to a shower to make myself feel better i fainted hitting my head...but i am grand now (as these Irish keep telling me) and all better!! Sorry for panicing you at the time Mum, Kizza, Nic and Ads haha! All i wanted to do was speak to home as i was very paniced so thanks to everyone for calming me down, much loveee :) your the best!!
We didn´t take a night off in La Paz, it just can´t be done! nopeeee so we spent 8 straight nights partying hard, i did however stop the drinking after the spiking incident, well until the last night!! We kept extending out stay and extending it some more until we literally had to leave as we were due to start Inca Trail in Cuzco, peru on the weds and it was a days journey to Cuzco from La Paz which took us a while to find out as we just didn´t put our bums into gear!
We made so many amazing friends in La Paz which also didn´t help with the whole moving on thing so we left on the Tuesday...one day before our inca trail started haha! Our bus left at 8am but that didn´t stop us frm going out! no no no!! not us!! We did the usual pre-drinking at the bar after the struggle to pack all our stuff up! Just as i´d done it...Tero (bar staff) came into my room and started to unpack it all telling me i wasn´t leaving and started to look for things i couldnt leave without! He tried his best but i did make him re-pack the bag and we went up to the bar...where we had a quiz for which we won best name and got a free round of drinks wooop wooop! I won´t tell all the name, but if you want to know please do email me and ask :) Anyway...this quiz was amazing! We were on fire, i am convinced that we won it as well but they couldn´t give us both titles, convinced of it i tell you!
You may ask why this quiz stood out from all the rest in the world, well the answer is there were 2 very original rounds! The Plastascene round where we were given the task of making an erect penis out of plastescene...we got 4/5, some more cheating go on here as our was AMAZING! and the other round being the LIMBO Round! I knoww...very exciting for everyone! We sent Kate as her representative as she was the smallest on the team, my boobs would only hinder ha! She came 4th so go Kate...!!!
Our last night clubbing we went to a bar called Brass Monkey where the bar staff in Wild Rover are friendly witht he manager so he was giving us more shots (he was beautiful may i add haha) and they were meant to close at 4am but decided to have a lock inn....which was lots of fun! Now our bus was at 8am so we had to call it quits at 6.50 and get back to the hostel, change and get us in a cab to the station!
Needless to say we were still drunk getting onto the bus, so buying depature tax things was ammusing and we went on a snack buying spree for no reason...but we did manage to get onto our bus! so go us!! haha!
The journey was not pleasant, we did feel ill, and as we hadn´t slept and the alcohol wore off the hangover kicked in....which made the border crossing even more pleasant! We passed Lake Titicaca on the bus...got us a few shots, looked very pretty! We had intended on spending a night there but then la Paz happened and well...we didn´t make it ha!
The journey was meant to take 12 hours, but a rock slide had taken place on one fo the roads which meant driving was difficult! All the boys on the bus got off at one point and started shifted a bunch of rocks, thank god there were a lot of israelis on the bus, as they were too impatient to wait haha!
We finally arrived in Cuzco after 16 hours on the bus...still feeling rubbish but with a new stamp in the passport! The hsotels were full so we checked into a small hotel for one night, we desperately needed a good nights sleep especially before Inca Trail!
Ok, so this was La Paz! I have left out lots of details as well some stories just don´t need to be told! But we made AMAZING friends all of whom we are meeting up with again before we leave SA! Everyone will be in Cuzco once we´re done with inca! So my next blog will be about our inca trail and our last wk in South America, so sad!
Miss you all, lots of love
