Zermatt
We took the Glacier Express train for the 8 hour trip between St.Moritz and Zermatt. It was incredibly beautiful going through the valleys, past waterfalls, over the most amazing coloured rivers and of course the backdrop of the Alps. It's highest point was at the Oberalppass at 2033m. Even at this point, there was no snow which would have added to the beautiful scenary. The engineering is just amazing. We also saw the after effects of what must have been a massive landslide that occured in 1991 just outside of Zermatt.
A couple of travelling cliches also accompanied us. A group of four Japanese ladies that must have photographed ever square inch of Switzerland. And next to us was a middleaged French couple who were enjoying croissants and a bottle of Bordeaux they smuggled on board.
We seem to get a similar reaction from everyone when they ask us where we are from and we tell them Australia. "Oohh, zat is very far away". We don't have the heart to tell them for the last 3 years we've been living less than a two hour flight away!
We had a couple of nights in Zermatt as well as some of the worst weather of the trip so far. We were lucky to see the Matterhorn when we first arrived because we didn't see it again due to the low cloud and rain.
We didn't let the weather stop us going up to Klein Matterhorn, although we were having some second thoughts half way up when the gale forced winds were blowing our little cable car carriage from side to side. It took almost an hour to get to the top but it was definitely worth it. The glaciers that have formed up there are so beautiful and you see the most amazing blue colour underneath. We also went into the ice caves which was kind of shortlived given we have only packed for summer on this trip!
Of course lots of good food including Raclette and fondue.
