Hello again, two blog entries in one day! Aren't you lucky!?!
It's Thursday night and I've arrived in Sydney to the same weather that greeted me back in December - a little bit chilly and rain!!! Luckily I'm only here overnight - I leave at 6.30am tomorrow and head to Surf Camp. Not looking forward to getting in a wet suit but there you go!!
So………Tuesday Morning (very early) I was picked up by Jane -the Oz Experience tour guide and after collecting the other passengers and some breakie in a café we headed for Wilsons Promontory where we saw kangaroos in the wild. I refrained from taking photos seeing as I already have a million photos of Kanagoroos already!!The next stop was squeaky beach which was absolutely stunning. We had lunch there and paddled/played frisby. Also went on a short walk but we got attached by giant flies so abandoned!! I swear I love this country but the flies are a pain in the ass.
I came up with a fab idea (well I thought it was) to manufacture baseball hats with those fly electrocuters on top (they're fluorescent blue and you find them in kitchens of restaurants etc) I figured they could be solar powered (environmentally friendly or take batteries) I really thought this invention could make me a millionaires. Okay people would have to accept walking round with dead flies on their heads but at least they wouldn't be in their eyes, nose and mouths! Only Adam from Bristol enlightened me I would a main power supply so it's a no go! Any ideas on how to get round this please let me know! I'll give you a cut of the profits!!
Anyway totally side tracking here…..from squeaky beach we arrived in the coastal town of Lakes Entrance - the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes and Australia's Longest beach - Ninety Mile Beach. This town was so quaint, we had fish and chips (and get ready for it…. salad) for tea. Never had salad with Fish and chips before but hey made you feel more healthy. Enjoyed a couple of beers before having a stroll down to the beach and seeing black swans! Stayed the night in a hostel and had an early night, we were all shattered!! The next day we had another early start - we left at 7am and drove for several hours to Kindabyne via the Snowy River Country. The scenery was breathtaking. We stopped for a quick lunch and then went to the Australian Alps where we saw Mount Kosciuszko (the highest point in Australia) and had a paddle in the Snowy river.Again we were attacked by giant flies ( I even swallowed one, gross!!) so we cut our walk short and chilled out by the lake.
The van decided to over heat on the way back down and there was black smoke coming out the back of it. We thought we were going to be stuck up the mountain all night but we eventually made it back down.We spent the night in a cute little motel over looking a lake and had a lovely dinner and several bottles of wine. It was Terri's 22nd birthday (Terri is from Tazmania) and her best mate Christina and I deiced to get both Terri and ourselves drunk to celebrate her birthday. We played some pool ate loads of birthday cake and then we got a box of goon and retired to our room, for tennis and girl talk with our other 5 roomies! Was great fun!!
Today we left at 8am after a yummy all inclusive fry up and drove for a few hours to Canberra - the city of Australia. We went to Parliament House and learnt some really interesting stuff. For example did you know…
The country's most famous drinking record was set by the legendary Australian Prime Minister Robert (Bob) Hawke in 1955. He drank 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds at University College Oxford.
And…….. on the 17th December 1967, Harold Holt, Prime Minister of Australia, went for a swim on Cheviot Beach near his holiday home at Portsea in Victoria. He disappeared beneath the waves and was never seen again. His companions raised the alarm, and what ensued was one of the largest search and rescue operations Australia has ever witnessed. Holt's body was never found, fuelling many theories regarding his disappearance, ranging from suicide to abduction by a Chinese submarine.
Finally ,in 1918 Albert Gardiner delivered Federal Parliament's longest speech at 12 hours and 40 minutes!!! Miss Kershaw - I think you'd even having trouble speaking non stop for that long….actually on second thoughts maybe not !! ;-) (You know I love ya really!) After lunch we went to the WarMemorial which as always is very interesting but also very sad at the same time. A few more hours of driving and we arrived in Sydney.
I'm absolutely shattered but unfortunately there is no rest for the wicked, as I said earlier I'm being picked up tomorrow morning very early for another long drive to surf camp!!
The tour from Melbourne to Sydney was great, I'm glad I did the road trip rather than fly as the scenery was amazing. However, the group wasn't the best. Lots of people were travelling in pairs or in groups so they're not so keen to make new friends as single travellers are. However the girls I shared a room with last night - Terri, Christina, Kim, Anita, Vina, Becki and Natalie were all lovely. I can't say the same for the two smelly Danish guys that sat behind me on the bus. Honestly they showed no interest in anything Jane had to say, refused to put shoes on when we went into Parliament house (and so were refused entry) and were just bloody rude.
I'm looking forward to making some new friends tomorrow though, who knows what the day will bring!! Right I'm off to bed now, I'm exhausted!!
Oh yes, before I go, I'm currently reading Marian Keyes book - Last Chance Saloon - Girls you need this book in your life, it's fabulous, guaranteed to make you smile.
Also you guys look up these Aussie songs on the net and have a listen - they're very funny! DEADLY ANIMALS COME TO AUSTRALIA by SCARED WEIRD LITTLE GUYS
