I met some Aussies who had also been to Anzac Day and through Turkey staying at the hotel, who were also catching the ferry so we all walked down to the port together. When I arrived at the port I was told i hadnt paid the port tax. I argued that I had and that they should contact the travel agent as i wasnt paying anymore. It cut it fine for me to board in time but i didnt have to pay extra so that was good.
As we were trying to leave Turkey, the ferry wasnt working for whatever reason so we had to board another one. We finally arrived in Samos port which was a 2 man band, quite funny. They had a sign up saying "If you have more than 10,000 to declare etc" and i thought, who are you declaring it too?!
Anyway, Luke and Ben, my new friends, spent the next few hours in Samos wandering the small port area and grabbing a bite to eat for lunch. They decided to follow me to Paros so it was nice to have some company for the trip ahead. They ended up bumping into other friends of theirs on the ferry so we had a nice grp of 5 of us on the boat as company. Lucy and Anton were headed to Naxos but decided to stay on board and also follow us to Paros. They all had nowhere to stay unlike myself so when we arrived at 2am they camped out on the beach where as i had a pretty cool hotel room overlooking the waterfront!
I wasnt sure if i would see them again, but they came and met me at my hotel the next day. We partied that night together before i said goodbye to them for the time being as they were staying there a little longer than I. The next day i made my way to Mykonos for a couple of nights. As i was checking in i bumped into a couple from my Turkey tour.
From Mykonos I went to Ios and surprisingly ended up hearing from Luke that they had arrived in Ios. So as expected we all hit the town once again once reunited. A few nights in party island Ios and then i was off to Santorini for 4 nights which was amazing. I hired an ATV for 2 days and just cruised around seeing the sights and more. I also did a donkey ride up from the old port, saving myself about 500 odd steps!
Then from Santorini it was Crete where I first went to Iraklion (Heraklion) and then Chania (Hania) before making my way up to Athens for a few nights. I met a local in Chania who took me to lunch and i ate amazing seafood and local dishes for nothing!!!!
Athens was better than expected too. There is so much to see there. Its not a pretty city but so much history and sites. I met a few ppl whilst i was here and found all these other things to see and do thanks to them and their lonely planet guides. I also met a local who took me to lunch and i tried more local cuisine. Interestingly, what we call a kebab back home they call a souvlaki in Greece and vice versa what we call a souvlaki they call a kebab, so kind of confusing. I also tried baklava, moussaka, Greek salad (which they have without lettuce) and other traditional meals yummo!!!
After Athens I caught a flight to Rome, Italy where i was to meet up with Ang as it worked out the same if not cheaper to fly than to bus/train to Patras, ferry from Patras to Bari and bus/train to Rome.
That was Greece for you. Of course I worked on my tan and have some colour. So watch out you whitties when i get home!!! Hahaha.
Love from Greece xox
