Day 1 - On the way to el Chalten (part of the Nat'l glacier park) we stopped at a little place (the only place) in between el Calafate & el Chalten called Hotel Leona. They had pictures there of a wanted sign for Butch Cassidy.Apparently he had robbed banks all the way down there & was hiding out in that area before moving on to Chile and eventually getting shot in Bolivia. There was also a mini museum which had dinosaur fossils & aboriginal artifacts & some petrified wood. When we finally got to el Chalten it was raining but luckily by the time we got ready to go out and hike the rain had stopped - thank you God! J We hiked up to laguna Capri which was a small part of the Fitz Roy trail. We had amazing vistas and saw a woodpecker. At the end of the trail on our way back to town we met some birders from New Zealand who told us about seeing a parakeet nest & we saw a hare w/ them.We ate dinner in an adorable little restaurant called La Tapera; they even had sheepskin on the benches.(Sheep are big time in Patagonia.)
Day 2 - We took an hour boat ride on lake Viedma to get to the Viedma glacier (the largest glacier in So. America - over 30 Km long)It was cool to see the water change from murky to the amazing milky green glacier water as we got closer to the glacier. We also saw quite a few iceburgs near the glacier. We used metal cramp-ons in order to be able to walk on the ice on top of the glacier.Every view & every angle was worthy of photographing and we took a ton of pictures! We saw an ice arc & drank some Baileys Irish cream over chipped glacier ice.On the way back we actually got to see most of the Fitz Roy mountain which was a big treat since 90% of the time it is hiding behind clouds. We hiked our last short trail & got to see a condor soaring above us!!It was so majestic!
