Im realising that im getting quite behind and being the organisation guru that i am im going to try and catch up! When i last left you we wer arriving in La Paz...the capitl of bolivia, and a city which i think captures the culture, people and feel to bolivia as a whole perfectly. I make this comment because i our experience of santiago, the capital of chile was quite the opposite. we found it souless, and almost a city that could be found in any european country. Anyway la paz certainly has soul, and confidence and an edge to it that makes it really unique and interesting to be a part of. Walking around can give you a headache, not just the altitude (the highest capital city in the world) but the noise and smells. There are people and cars everywhere. The women are small and weathered (the harsh climate is even harsher on the skin, and they dont have access to olay anti ageing like we do!!!), theyall wear bowler hats and brightly coloured shawls which they tie round their shoulders to carry things in. Its amazing they all have these sacks on, what on earth are they carrying!!! We even saw a protest, and they were still carrying these mounds on their cacks, banner in tow! The food there is something to be a little sceptical of, one of their delicacys is literally called ´fake rabbit´, im afraid i didnt sample it so i can tell you more than that! The markets were incredibly vast, we spent hours just walking round soaking up the atmosphere. In south america everything, i mean EVERYTHING is sold on the street on stalls, its bizarre. The markets arent just for peoples livelihoods, they are a way of life and the best way,as a traveller, to soak up the cutlure and get a feel for the place. We rarely buy anything but enjoy walking round and marvelling at the ingenious ways people try to make a living...in la paz the most interesting and gruesome was llama foetuses in jar....i dont know why!!! And the shoe shiners, on every street corner, reminding you that ultimately we were in a place where so many people were so mcu h worse of than ourselves, its a cliche, but it makes you reflect upon your own life and appreciate the things you so often take for granted.
I´ll leave it there for now. We´re on the peruvian coast now and i want to catch a glimpse of the ocean!
Love to you all untill next time xxxxxx
