Hi all,
Im happy to report that i think the salmonella/parasite/gastroentiritis problem seems to pretty much sorted. I saw my third and final doctor in Guayaquil, ecuador and gor some very strong antibiotics and a few other potions which seem to be doing the trick. He was very strict tho and put me on a liquid diet...i wasnt impressed...and in celebrtion of it ending we made a big splurge on the biggest dominoes pizza going (dominos in s.a. is unheard of!).
Anyway i last left you in La Paz, capital of bolivia...from here we headed north to a little town called copacabana which lies on the edge of the beautiful and enormous Lake Titicaca. Unfortunately we didnt get to appreciate this as much as we had hoped because this was the point at which the dreaded salmonella made its appearance! It got sam first the day we arrived in copacabana, and then me the next day on route to cusco in Peru. As you can imagine there isnt much to report on that following week... i was wel looked after in hospital(sam was chuffed coz we had a private room and sky tv!) and then the following week consisted of lots of chilling out with dvds and nice food. Cusco is a beautiful town, and starting point for the infamous Macchu Piccu treks. Unfortunately we had to miss our tour because of my illness but on the upside its a good enough excuse to return to south america in the future! Cusco was the perfect place to get ill because it has been developed purely for tourist that arrive in there hoards from all over the world every year. A highlight was discovering the most amazing cafe "Jacks", the best BLT ever...a godsend when you havent eaten for days! We also met a really nice American couple who were on a similar vibe to us, chill chill chill! I think the highlight of our time there was when we ventured outside the main town...the tourist area which has been artificially created for tourists giving a misleading representation of the city...beautiful buildings, floers, posh bars etc etc into the real city of Cusco. 5 minutes out by tut tut, and the difference is striking...you see the poverty that burdens most of south America. We went to the daily market and wandered around for a couple of hours (it was ridiculously vast)...the locals couldnt stop staring, i dont think many blond "gringos" pass through that way very often. The ffod sector was incredible, the only way to describe it is a treat for the eyes and nose...the smells and colours of the fruit, veg, meat and fish...much more thrilling than ur daily trip to the local tesco!
Next port of call was Lima, capital of peru...we had heard mixed reports about the place (big, noisy, dirty, dangerous...dont go!!!) but we were intrigued and decided if its the capital it deserves a visit. LIma can wait till next.
We are in Montanita now, a small beach town on the coast of ecuador...certainly the greenest, lushest country we have visited and so far we are having blast. MOntanita has earned its reputation of the party capital of ecuador (despite it being about the size of west jesmond!)...and its living up to its reputation. Full of surfers, travellers and bars offering all you can drink for the equvalent of 3 pounds...you cant say fairer than that!
I hope all is well for everyone back home and il get backon the blog soon....
All our love xxxxxxxxx
