Dear all,
Thankyou for all your messages, its so lovely to hear from everyone...please keep us updated with what you are upto.
I cant remember all the questions asked, but pheebs, the picture of the animal you mentioned is a monkey! Every morning at the hostel in rio they appeared while we had breakfast on the decking, they especially liked it if we shared our bananas with them!
Since friday, lots more to report. Our night out in Lapa (a part of rio, famous for is nightlife) was incredible. There was a huge group of us from the hostel that went out, which was great coz quite a few knew the ropes! The atmosphere was crazy, dancing in the streets, people everywhere...certainly not for the faint hearted! We went to a huge club called rio scenarium, and within an hour and a few caphrinas (natiional drink) later we were mingling with the locals and dancing (or attempting to) the samba! A few of the local brazilians really took a liking to us (we have loads of pics), and sam got a private samba lesson from a brazilian girl whilst i had a go with a local brazilian guy! The locals were so friendly, it really made the whole night one to remember.
Saturday was our first lie in, and when we all got up we were soon on the go again...to a football match at the incredible Maracana football stadium to watch Flamengo Vs Sao Paulo...nearly 60,000 turned up. I was pretty nervous at first, we had to go with a guide, and as we pulled up in the van into a sea of people he mentioned that Flamengo had a very large favela following and riots were common! Once we were seated tho, I calmed down a bit and soaked up the indescribable atmosphere- it was mental!!!!! Singing, dancing, drums, confetti, huge flags, flares...for 90 whole minutes! Sam was in his element, and even bought a shirt for under a tenner (the novelty of how cheap everything isnt wearing off!). we´ll post a video shortly so you can see for yourselves....
With Sunday being our last day, we got up early with a jam packed itinery. We jumped on the bus (i dont know if iv mentioned already...but again mental, you have to hold on for dear life!). In the morning we visited the botanical gardens, and the ´hippie market´, which you would have loved Nicki! Gorgeous jewellrey, clothes, artwork for next to nothing. We sampled some more brazilian cuisine patries filled with meat and herbs...yummy. We have eaten like kings since we´ve been here! Finally we went to sugar loaf moantain, you get a (v scary) cable car upto the top, which is wort it...incredible views of the whole of the city. It was a lovely way to end our trip in rio, the sun was setting, and it was all so romantic :-)
That evening, we spent our last few hours at the bar in our hostel with all the people we had met during our time. Its amazing the range of people we have met so far, all really interesting and with something great to offer. There is a guy from manchester and his partner from new zealand who were great fun and we are hoping to meet back up with them in colombia and if not back in england when we are home. There is also an australian girl that we night put up for a while in newcastle!
4 am monday morning and we are on the go again to santiago. we were very tired and doolaly which made the two flights to get there quite a laugh...on arrival we were greeeted with blue skies, stunning snow capped moantains and smily chilean faces.
Since thena few more things to report including an earthquake! But will have to save that for another time because were off to catch a 24 hour bus jouney upto the atacama desert now, in northern chile. Plus i dont know how long the internet will last!
Again, we happy and healthy and having a wonderful time. Each day is bringing something new and exciting. We´ll keep you posted as often as poss.
All our love to you all,
Ems and sam xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
