Saz and Dave's travels
Today we got up early as it was the first day of our 3 day trek. We packed a small bag with our essentials, leaving the rest in storage and got onto the back of a truck with seats down each side. Altogether there were ten people in our trekking group - dave, me, 3 more English people (Stu, Mickey and Chris - just finished school), a Japenese bloke and a Danish family (mum, dad and two kids). We drove for about an hour then stopped off at a local market to get some water and stuff. It was so nice to get into the countryside after all the noise of the cities - Chiang Mai like Bangkok has a tremendous amount of traffic! The scenery is stunning round here and it seems a bit cooler.
We stopped for lunch at a waterfall where some people went swimming and we got a locally prepared rice dish take-away to eat. After a bit more driving we got out and set off walking for a few hours to the hill tribe village where we were to spend the night. On the way we saw a tarantula hole pointed out to us by our guide, Ray. The other guide Bang then thought it would be a good idea to poke a stick into the hole, causing a massive tarantula to come out and attack the stick!
After a few hours of very hot walking we arrived at the village where we were shown our accomodation for the night - a large hut with bamboo floor and mats with a couple of blankets thrown in. Luckily mosquito nets were also provided. The toilet was just a hole in the ground with no sink or shower, just a hose. The village didn\'t have electricity either so our headtorchs were very useful!
For tea, Ray cooked us potato curry with garlic and ginger chicken and veg - it was delicious! After tea we sat around a bonfire while a boy from the village showed us magic tricks. We went to bed really early - about 9 as there wasn\'t really anything else to do and we were all quite tired.
