Cairns has been our biggest none starter yet. I don't really want to write about Cairns because I'm sure it can be amazing, that just wasn't our experience of it. We arrived here and went to stay in gilligans backpackers which we thought was going to be like paradise. Only $22/night (a tenner), we got 2 clubs a bbq a swimming pool and another bbq, gym, volleyball net, games room, tv lounges and an en suite. In reality we found that every weirdo from the whole of queensland (possibly the whole of australia) had also thought that this was paradise and the tales from that hostel are just unbelievable.
Needless to say, we found a sharehouse to move into asap with a spa and bbq and it was just generally a really nice place to live. We stayed here for a month desperately looking for jobs so that we could earn money to pay for the next leg of our travels but unfortunately we couldn't find anything and so are flying to Brisbane today. Cairns wasn't totally wasted though, we made friends with some really nice people and i got to meet up with a few friends from bondi and surf camp etc as well as obviously celebrating paddys as ever so that's always good.
Also me and Toni, one of the girls I live with got a free trip out to green island which is an hour away on a boat and basically is a paradise island. It has rainforest and beaches and we got to go on a submarine and see all the fish in the great barrier reef before heading back to the ship for a buffet lunch (real food!!) and onto the beach for some sunbathing (sunburning) and snorkelling on the reef.
It was absolutely amazing! We got all kitted up with our snorkel, mask and flippers (foxy) and only had to swim out about 100m to be completely immersed in the great barrier reef. there were massive, tiny, illuminous, scary, ugly and every other kind of fish u can imagine...stunning, such the best day. Back onto the boat and home to make the boys jealous and after sun up after burning ourselves to a crisp out on the island. Definitely my favourite day in Cairns, although any day the sun is shining and we can go down to the lagoon is pretty cool because the beaches are a jellyfishy and there is a risk of crocodiles all round Cairns, being tropical. I'm not a fan of the tropics...too humid and I'm expecting to see snakes and crocs at every turn (I haven't by the way, which is sort of disappointing).
So Brisbane should do it's jobs and cheer us all up hopefully as it's apparently full of jobs and bars and not full of bats, crocs or snakes..roll on Brisbane!
