Last few weeks at the trans flew by...got to know and love everyone who worked there even though I really didn't want to because then moving on is harder. Big last week, lots of hours, bank holidays, football matches (as in australian football, afl...not real football!), bank holidays and biggest of the big state of origin where queensland battle it out against new south wales in the biggest rugby match of the year.
All the furniture was taken out of the bar so that everyone could fit in and after an epic day of 14 hours work I was definitely ready for bed. I have to say it was so much fun though, bit different from a normal day at the trans! few more days work and with the arrival of dunks (our friend from bondi), we caught a train to stevie's own australia zoo!
Took in the croc show and walked around to see the tigers, elephants and cuddle a koala before heading back home to catch some z's before the boys last night in Brisbane which we spent in birdee num nums (as if we hadn't spent enough time there being the club we live above!) and later on the mustang bar, unfortunately not meeting up with the guys from work because we were all so wiped from the day at the zoo and I was in work the next day.
Finished work, said goodbye to the regulars and the workies and headed home to pack for the roadtrip...wooooooooooooo!
Picked up our aptly jesusy wicked camper (all campers have things drawn on them, mostly completely dirty and rude and so I was worried about whether I would be able to take photographic evidence of how we'd travelled or whether it would give my nan a heart attack but turns out we were given the jesus one so all's well nan )...and headed out of Brisbane onto the open road, first stop bundaberg - home of bundy rum and what seems like the worlds supply of sugar! Camped in an overflow carpark for the airport after a near bloodshed as tensions rose about not being able to find anywhere to stay as evidently we all had a very different image of the type of place we'd be stopping.
Early rise at 6 and off to townsville via 1770 which is absolutely gorgeous and really small. Arrived in rockhampton for lunch, then back in the van to drive up to mackay in time to have a look around and find a national park to camp in, smalleys beach...watched the sunset, hit the sheets and up again bright and early to see sunrise and carry on on the road to cairns, this time up to townsville.
The drive to townsville was a sticky one, no shower for 3 days and I was feeling it...ew! still, I suppose that's the real traveller experience, embrace it right!? Arrived at townsville...got a shower! So happy, out to the pub and back to sleep, slightly later start and driving up to cairns by lunch time, booking into our site and hitting the beach at yorkeys k*** to catch some well deserved rays...tea at the c*** and bull for a mammoth portion of bangers mash and veg and to sleep.
Today was an early rise for all, the boys have a padi (scuber diving course) for the next 4 days which means early starts for them and, being in a camper van...early starts for me too by default...that's ok though. Today I've wandered back into Cairns, revisitting where we used to live and go and I have to say I like it a lot more 2nd time around despite the lagoon being closed...now all my photos are on and up to date and the videos, I'm going to go and grab some food to cook on our gas hob...honestly, who needs duke of edinborough!
So to summarise brisbane to cairns roadtrip, 3 days no shower (not cool), 1 carpark, 1 national park, 1 caravan park, lots of macdonalds breakfasts, 1 fatality - a duck (mercilessly mown down by harris), an unquantifiable amount of flies (although evidently from the bites on my legs not nearly enough!) too many kangaroos which you are actively encouraged to mow down, near fatalities - 1 harris for mowing down the duck in gregson's presence who i now realise has an unhealthy love of birds? and not the female variety...the feathery ones...who knew?!
