The Great Escape
Temperature : anywhere between 15C and 50C, as dry as it three cream crackers with no water
Highlights: Our first proper bus journey (20 hours) was a lot of fun (Pat and Chips, what bus did you go on?), they even play bingo on the bus. After having crossed the border in Arica we arrived at the arm pit of the world, Tacna (Peru). Within 60 seconds of getting of the bus we came across our first scam: While one trickster distracted us offering a 10 dollar note, his partner in crime stole Steve's camera bag with ALL the equipment in it. Watching Steve, dressed in a poncho and cowboy hat (he looked like the local shepherd), run with 30 kilos of rucksack must have scared the living day lights out of the poor Peruvian as he dropped the bag and fled in sheer fear. With 9 days to go in the Peruvian election we stumbled across a massive political rally in Arequipa. It is the second largest city in Peru with fantastic architecture in the city centre.
Disappointments: Not catching the thief.
Other: We ran out of petrol halfway across the Desert, next time we'll fly, or maybe not.
