28th April
For our last day in Aix, we decided to drive down south and check out Marseille and Cassis. Marseille is a major port of France and has been inhabited for 26 centuries making it one of the oldest cities in France. We notice a wide variety in the mix of people here. It has a street called La Canebiere which is a big bustling boulevard which stretches from fields down to the port where the hemp was made into rope.
We drive to the centre of town to an underground car park. From here we can walk everywhere. The port is a u shape and restaurants specializing in fish line the quai. The "must eat" dish is bouillabaisse and we search for the best looking food for lunch. Pod orders Moules which are superb and I try the bouillabaisse. Sadly, I find it extremely salty with many small bones in the fish making it tricky to eat. Quelle disaster! My first bad meal of the trip... a lesson for me, I do not like bouillabaisse!
Next stop Cassis, a cute fishing village famous for... Cassis, a fruity liquor made from grapes of the region. We had read that it is sometimes difficult to park in these tiny towns, quite often you must park in car parks on the outskirts. This is the case with Cassis, with roads blocked and people walking quite a distance to town. After parking and walking to the main square we discover it is the first day of a Spring festival for the town. It is a really lovely village, a warm sunny day and locals playing boulle in the main gardens... Well worth a visit. It has a gorgeous beach where I can't resist shedding my shoes, rolling up my pants and paddling in the pacific... Tres froid et quite icy!!! We find a cute bar and have a lovely drink in the sun overlo
