FRI 5th: up at 5am to take tuk tuk at 5:30 to angkor wat to see sunrise over the temple. temples were fascinating, site is huge, temples were huge. steps were insanely steep. visited like 11 / 12 temples. the details they went into for the stone decoration was facinating. must have taken them hundreds of yrs to build. temples visited were angkor wat, ankor thom (beng thom, bayoun, baphoun, phineanakas), chau say tevoda, thommanom, ta keo, ta phrom, srah srang (pool) and banteay kdei. then after that climbed hill to another temple, phnom bakheng and watched the sunset over cambodia. back in siem reap, went to dead fish for food, then bed.
one downside of the angkor area, is that there is a hell of alot of kids, mainly girls trying to sell you stuff. friendly doing it but so many it does get to u. and they pull all the lines like if u dont buy then i will cry.
SAT 6th: today we had a late start. went to angkor again for 11:30 but saw some different sites. banteay srei (excellent exhibition), east mebon, ta som, preah khan* and neak pean. came back home got ready but girls already gone. so i went out on my own. managed to find Beer St. tourist spot loads of restaurants. had food at red piano then stopped off at internet place. came back and girls were there. so we played cards for rest of night.
SUN 7th: girls went to church (morman if thats how u spell it) so i went and bought bus ticket to phnom penh and bought some showergel $2!! :( we then went to Roluous to see more temples: preah ko, bakong, prasat prei monti and lolei - met this kid who showed us around his school he was teaching at. eventually went back to ankor wat to get some nicer photos as previous ones weere hazy. bought a nice angkor wat t shirt for $2. went out for food in night on beer street. treated myself to some oreo ice cream!! lovely jubly. went to girls room and met their cambodia and american friend. played cards again with lisa.
MON 8th finished packing, had breakfast with girls and their friends. said bye, taxi picked me up to go to bus station - bus station being a bit of wasteland next to a market. every 2 seconds they sound their horns. because at junctions there's no traffic lights, theres not even stop, or give way signs, so they just plough thru sounding the horns and hope for the best. it makes it exciting i guess. bus journey was 6 1/2 hrs long. did stop twice tho. arse didnt enjoy it - wasnt bumpy but legs and arse aching and couldnt move. got in phnom penh around 5:30, bartered with tuk tuks, managed to knock them down a dollar to $1.50. first impressions of phnom penh (p2) is dirty and looks run down. got to tat hostel but they wanted $7 for single room, $4 dollar for shared bathroom. went next doo to narin and got room with ensuite for $5.time unpacked and everything it was 7pm. decided not to venture out as apparently its a dodgy area. also guidebook says these two hostels are the hype of travellers hotspots in restaurants. i stayed there till 9:45 -only one there all night. felt pretty lonely tonight, think its the fact that it is the 1st proper day i spent on my own and had to find accom on my own. its a nice size room. not very safe tho. windows dont lock and door could open easy with a good kick. i have an ant nest in my shower, the toilet smells, i have at least 10 damn mozzies flying around my room and theres quite a few cockroaches running around outside. but im in cambodia! and i dont care!!
tues 9th: woke up early today7. got sorted decided on a plan of action. i walked up to capitol to see about the tours they do. booked my tour to choeung ek and booked bus to hcmc. had till 11 for tour so decided to walk around the city centre. then went back through the open market and then through indoor markey. on way to killing fields saw a cop outside a school with an ak47. had 50mins around killing fields -got a guide with the people on the tour. really interesting but horrific at the same time. paths we were walking on were eroding and skeletons were becoming visable in the soil. went back to hostel for a cold shower (having alot of them recently!) then decided to walk to sisowath quay, along the green route. very nice, totally different to rest of city. was going to stay there till late but not much there, just promenade and small but many restaurants - happy herbs and happy phnom ;) went out for food to restaurant down road from hostel. very strange place, waitresses underage, sat down with old men, possibly cops and had drinks with them. my waitress kept on lingering like i was supposed to ask her to sit and chat, she must have been 14/15. as im writing this its raining. pissing down in fact. been outside for 2 mins to stand in it.lovely.
good thing about PP =people friendly, small enough to walk around, happy pizzas young population. trying to cross street. no pigeons. many women walking around in their pj's. baad thing about PP =poor, rundown, nothing here, very unhygenic.
