Wow what a morning...just been out whale watching. Saw a sperm whale after about an hour at sea. Saw it rise to the surface and then float while it re-oxygenated and had a poo then the most fantastic thing - watched it go under the water - huge tail waving goodbye to us. Nate tried to take some pictures but it was really choppy and he was lucky not to have gone over board!
The great vision of the whale momentarily took my mind of my sea sickness...as it submerged my sickness lunged into my throat and I had to rush to the bathroom...meantime there were loads of dolphins swimming next to the boat playing with each other and showing off the crowds that were scrambling to take pictures. Nat managed to get some good shots and a short film. I only got to see them for about 5 mins after being sick and before they turned the boat back to head inland - which I was ever grateful for.
One other fab thing we saw was a Southern Right Whale with her 2 babies. We saw this phenomenon within about 2 mins of pulling into Kaikoura. Locals haven't seen something like this for about 40 years so we were really lucky. The whale was taking refuge in the shallow waters so as to protect her babies from the killer whales who were circling the waters...they as their name suggests kill whales - but interestingly they only kill them for their tongues and then leave them to die a horrid death! Get that eh?! Surprised that the whales haven't sprouted legs and moved inland to escape the b*****s.
