Rubbi and Nathan's Extended Honeymoon Travels...
Crossed the Cook Staits by ferry and are now in the South Island of NZ...this is supposed to be the more beautiful of the two islands..
First stop was the Marlborough Sounds...beautiful place ...small group of islands right at the top of the island.Stayed at Anakiwa Lodge which was a fabulous Homestay. Helen owned the place and she rented out a couple of the rooms...very cosy and great home feel to it - although no smell of sabjiz or roti! The lodge was pitched right at the start/end of The Queen Charlotte Walk - one of the best and most scenic walkways in NZ...suppoed to take about 3-5 days to walk the whole route...Nat and I opted for the 2 hours walk instead.
Helen had a neice called Becky who stayed with her and she was well on the way to becoming the farmer she intended to be...she has 3 calves, dogs, cats, 12 canaries and finches and has won numerous awards for her "pet keeping skills"...but the best bit of all - the thing that really sets her apart from other 12 year olds I know is that she regularly partakes in PIG killing and possom shootings (The Kiwis HATE possoms with a passion by the way - they either eat them, make socks or shoes out of them or just try and run them over for fun!!)...Becky's a real character. Reena - this one would be ideal for you - she's one of only 35 students in her ENTIRE school!
Second stop in the "sounds" was at Mahana Homestead. Wow what a place - arse end of nowhere and Nate got a little car sick with all the bendy roads that we took for about 3 hours but worth it. Cosy backpackers right on the beach front and stunning views. Went on another part of the Queen Charlotte walk to the "lookout" - which essentially was a fantastic view about across the Sounds Islands - stunning views...so quiet and calm and just felt like being at the end of the earth.
Then came back and kayaked for a little while but I started to freak out a little bit when the wind picked up and I coulnd't steer my kayak anywhere near the "safe" parts of the water...so called it a day.
Oh my the fun never ends...
