We started the morning in Lake Havasu City. The second ambulance arrived at 4:30 this morning. Great News. We delayed our departure this morning while the second ambulance crew got cleaned up and had a breakfast. This give us a chance to wax the fire truck and clean up the Edson bus. Also time for fuel and a Starbucks for Murray.
We followed the Colorado River for the first part of the day from Lake Havasu to Parker City. The view was scenic with lots of seasonal resorts and campgrounds along the way. We tried to pull over, but didnt have the park pass required. Great cliffs and the river was great.
Our first fuel up was at Quartzite, Arizona. It was well done- we had never seen an Arizona Hot Dog- a rolled up hamburger- no takers.
Then we were off through the desert to Toponah for lunch. We had lunch at Subway, fueled up and then went to leave. The ambulance wouldnt start due to fuel problems. Mike and Glenn and Bob and 14 other opinions assisted in the repair of the vehicle and got it back on the road within a couple of hours. More time to take a look around and buy some Navaho trinkets.
Back on the road again. The desert changed again. Less mountains but bigger cactus. The cactus are Saguaro cactus which were 6 to 20 feet high and in some areas it was almost like a cactus forest.
We headed south and went through Tuscon and continued south. Arrived in Nogales at about 630, however we went too far and went downtown and just about to the border. Had to turn the fleet around and head back north, just about clipping curbs and pedestrians. Finally arrived at Holiday Inn Express, filled up with fuel and refreshments.
Had a team meeting to determine the rules for crossing the border tomorrow. No radios. No talking. Driver only in customs. Then the Mexican customs where we will meet Pepesan from Mazatlan Rotary to bring us through the procedure. Previous experience has shown the process being from 2 hours to 14 hours.
So tonight due to the late night. Some went to IHOP and the rest ordered pizza and refreshments in the hotel breakfast room.
So, keep the messages coming.
Tomorrow, the border, distance from current location- 1 km.
