Day Six Schlern, Italy- After a good night of sleep we were off to climb Sasso Piato and the Schlern.Tim voiced concern over staying at the Schlern Rifugio, paying for two rooms and only using one.Grabbed some pastries and another coke as there was no coffee in sight! We, jumped on a bus to Compatsch and another bus to Saltria. We took a lift up to Williams with about 30 people over the age of 60.We blew past these people on the trail up the side of the mountain; most were heading to the trail that circles Sasso Piato (S.P.). On the lookout for the trail sign that pointed to the summit of S.P., we hiked about 45 minutes down the trail passing tons of old-timers, circling the base of the mountain."Where is the freaking trail," we kept asking. Finally we turned around after arriving at a mountain hut that was jammed packed full of people. It turns out that The Rifugio Sasso Piato was the site of the trailhead to the summit and somehow we blew past it.Mad as hell we turned back, and went cross country on a goat trail that looked promising. We had wasted nearly 2 full hours and that did not jive with our plans to get back down to Casetelrotto after visiting the Schlern. We decided to push towards the top of S.P. but the weather changed about 1/3rd of the way up the climbing path. The temperature was dropping rapidly requiring me to start putting on my Gortex shells. Additionally snow was now falling lightly and the wind was blowing steadily at 10 mph. We abandoned our quest of S.P. (2955 meters) after seeing another climbing party above us have significant problems on the Glacier above , turning back themselves.Still miffed about my error and the waste of time, we headed back down for some lunch reaching the Rifugio S.P. a little after noon.
