Hey Hey!
Well it's been a while since i've had internet access.. Right now im at the CACS (Centre for Alaska Coastal Studies). I'm here for a week doing training and i'm on a break right now using one of their computers. This morning we introduced ourselves: Its Bree - the supervisor, two other girls who just became employed here about my age, and i'm the only volunteer. I wont go into the details now about what i'm giong to be doing, as that would take forever so I'll just keep updating on here when I can. Also, after induction this morning, we all went up and did a short hike through a forrest! Was awesome! I saw a squirrel (got some photos), some eagles and a few other creatures. We were tracking a moose but it went way off the track. Then the supervisor (Bree) shouted us (they don't say that here) lunch! which was very nice!
I've just been talking to Bree about what I can do on my days off. One idea is going to climb by myself "flat top peak", a mountain accross the bay from Homer - so I have to go accross by boat or kayak. Also, to go to Kodiak island (plane 1 hour or boat 12 hours) and stay there for a few nights! Lots to do there, including bear watching! But the bears don't come out until at least end of april - may.
Also, there is a river called the Six Mile River, which is class V so I might kayak or raft down that aswell when the ice breaks up. Then I might head up to Denali national park (also known as Mt Mckinley) and spend some nights there mountain climbing, kayaking, hiking, whatever I can do.
There are lots more I can do but I'll save the best for when I finish my volunteering, and before or after I head to canada!
Everyone I've met so far is very nice and I've made some very cool friends! One guy, who is actually from oz, called Stewart, well him and I are going to travel around together because he is also into white water kayaking, mountaineering etc etc. A guy called Wil, well he owns this hostel in Homer, well hes awesome and is going to lend me a nice as mountain bike for my time here for FREE!!! and take me around a few places.
Anways, the photo you see, well that's of Mandy and myself standing on lake Portage. Yes that's right, standing on a lake. It is frozen solid! some people even had their cars on it doing slides and drifts on it etc.
On the way down to Homer, Mandy showed me heaps of wicked spots to check out and we stopped to get lots of photos! She really knows her ALASKAN TERRITORY!!!
Anyways I have to go now, i'm going to look at some charts and sort out where i'm giong to hike etc. Thank you for all your comments and emails!! Keep it up please! :D Even if i dont reply, I do sometimes have just enough time to check stuff. We get a certain amout of free internet in Homer per day, for example the library gives half an hour of free net a day, and some cafes etc have free internet. Hope all is well in nz! miss you all and catch ya later!!
