Hey Hey!
Rob here again.
Well I've made it to Homer, Alaska!!! it was a long drive from Anchorage, but.. the fantastic views along the way made up for it! We honestly stopped about 9 or 10 times to take photos. I have never seen so many mountains in my life! The whole way we were driving through mountains - with the base of them just a few metres away from the road! All covered in snow and ice of course! Saw lots of glaciers as well!
All the rivers were completely frozen over - except for the Russian River which was mostly frozen with a bit of moving water in the middle. Hopefully I'll get to kayak or raft down that at the end of my volunteering project as all the ice would have melted hopefully. Also - it is a grade 5 river!! so awesome rapids and waterfalls to kayak down!
Oh, guess what!? I saw moose! lots of moose! along the way on the road and the side of the road - and they are big. Imagine a huge racing horse... well think double the size and thats your average size moose!
We also stopped at a few places - one called portage glacier - where we walked accross a lake - yes thats right - the entire lake was covered in ice and snow. The snow at times was more than knee height so that was a bit of fun - cold though! By the time Mandy and I made it to Homer - we were both soo tired.
We arrived at my new accommodation - its a little wee cabin. Its very Alaskan! Its fully made out of wood and is well equiped! Its a lot better than I expected! Its my own little house for 2 months! Well, I wont be there the entire time. Some of the time in the next two months i'll be living on a boat or in a tent! But normally I will be in the cabin. I can't post pictures of it yet as i'm using a library computer and i'm not able to upload my pics! But i'll try and get to an internet cafe soon to do that. Anways, after we arrived and unpacked my gear and food that Mandy bought for me for the next 2 months (shes leaving tomorrow - sunday) we we ended up going to a mexican place for dinner - I had a seafood chimi and Mandy had a (I can't remember what its called) but imagine a huge nacho - like the size of a massive bowl, filled with halibut (alaska fish) and salad! After that we headed back to the cabin and listened to some music for a while and hit the hay. This morning we woke up and Mandy took me to this place called "The Two Sisters" for breakfast! very nice! Kind of french too. For coffee and a pastry. Lots of awesome photographs in there as well! If you like photography that is..
And now i'm in the library doing this hahaha. The rest of the day - i'm just going to settle in, explore part of the town and take some more photos. maybe try and rent a kayak or somethign and attempt to paddle out in the water which isn't frozen as we are right on the ocean here with mountains forming the coast! Seriously, the mountains drop straight down into the ocean - its crazy. Eventually i'm going to try and climb some of them - but i just need to settle in first, and get to know some people - i know some already who are very nice. one guy is going to let me borrow his mountain bike for a few months!
I'm also thinking of extending my time here in Alaska - i'm not sure if i'll be able to cause of my visa and my jobs back in nz - but if I can extend it I will so I can have tonnes of time to explore more of Alaska - as its soooo big.
Oh when we were walking into the mexican place last night for dinner, two moose! A mother and its baby were standing about 20 metres away from us! walking along the road! it was insane! They were huge too! And Mandy told me we needed to get inside haha cause they do run at you and are quite aggressive.
Homer is full of golden and bald eagles too! So i'll try and get some photos of them. They are massive as well! Anyways the internet is free but i only get 30 mins so I have to go now. Catch you later!
