Today is Luke's birthday, and all day he felt he should get as much orange Fanta (which tastes a lot better than the American version) and ice cream as he wanted whenever he wanted. We all had to get up early (7:00 AM!). Our tickets for the Alhambra were for 8:30 AM and we wanted to eat before we started. Caught a cab up the hill and entered the complex. It is huge! We started in the Nasrid Palace, which was the palace of the Sultan and later of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. It was full of Islamic decorations, fountains, ponds, and flowers. We saw the room where Columbus received permission for the king and queen to make his trip to "India". We also saw the fortress part of it and the beautiful Generalife gardens, which were the Sultan's gardens and have not changed much in 500 years. Had a good and expensive lunch and finally after 5 hours went back to the hotel for a siesta. Went out again for a walk to the top of the Albaysin district. Stopped at a crepe place for a snack. The Albaysin is the hill across from the Alhambra and is filled with narrow streets. It was the historic Moor neighborhood back 500 years ago. Got some great pictures up there. Walked back down the hill, past where Granada's Roma (Gypsy) community lives in cave homes, and back to the main square for dinner and more ice cream. Tomorrow we will check out a couple more things in Granada and then an afternoon flight to Barcelona.

Kristin Happy birthday to Luke!!! We missed celebrating with you at the lake this year. We have actually been at the lake for 10 out of the last 11 days. It's just so much more enjoyable there when it's 100 degrees out as it was most of the last week. We also took our yearly trek to Great America and had a great time, despite the 104 degree temperature! Luke, exactly how many orange Fantas did you have today? Love, Kristin, Angel, Diego and Nico
Darlene Happy Birthday, Luke. What a great way to celebrate your birthday. I hope you got all the Fanta you wanted.
