What a great start to Europe. Crossing from Tanger-Mediterraneane, Morocco to Algeciras in Spain, it was almost 56 years since I first saw the Rock of Gibraltar from the sea, and it still looks the same, a sleeping lion facing the sea.
Up at 5:00am for. 6:00am departure and a 2hr drive to the ferry terminal 2 hrs before the 11:00 ferry. We made by 8:00 and after going through customs etc, made the 9:00 ferry, which was good because it was almost empty and it gave more time on arrival in Spain.
Then the taste of Europe began. A real espresso to wash down a caramel filled croissant at the port, then once in Tarifa, another espresso in a patisserie where we just had to have sweet pain au raisin. Then after a quick dash to the bus station to get the tickets for tomorrow, followed by several circumnavigations of the Tarifa old town in drizzling rain, we went for dinner.
A couple of Spanish specialities, eggplant and Gorgonzola on a light puff pastry base, vegan gyozas, and a plate of Iberian pork with fried green veggies, rounded off with a basil sorbet in passionfruit juice and peaches, and a three tiered carrot cake and cream for me. All that and a glass of wine and we were well and truly ready for bed.
Interestingly though, in a restaurant of at least 50 people of all ages, young and not so young that I could see, there was not one person on their phone. Also, there was no music to raise the overall noise of people trying to talk to each other. Fantastic.
Tomorrow it’s off to Verjer de la Frontera for 3 days of recovery and forward preparation.
