Train and bus from Córdoba to Granada seemed to be over in no time. Another testament to Jean's organising prowess. The transport system and the roads make travelling in Spain hassle free.
Arriving in Granada we took a taxi to our hotel which was just as well because the is no way we would have found it on foot. Located in the heart of the Moorish part of town, surrounded by narrow alleys full of leather handbags, Arabic lights and Teteria (tea houses) the hotel was fantastic. We had a top floor room with a roof top terrace with spectacular views toward the Alhambra and the snow capped Sierra Nevada range behind. Just the place for an ice cold San Miguel at the end of the day.
The highlight of course was the day spent at the Alhambra, as the photos hopefully demonstrate.
When compared to all the other palaces, gardens etc of antiquity that we have seen in all our travels, the single defining experience was the complete absence of statutes or any sort of iconary. The beauty was in the intricate stone lacework that adorned every room and the use of water and gardens that provide an oasis to rest and contemplate what life would have been like for those that lived here 1000 years ago.
Of course the other assault on the senses is the continual grazing by all and sundry in the taps bars that occupy every second shop front.
Finding somewhere to eat is always a challenge but we managed to find an outdoor terrace under a spreading grape vine at the foot of the Alhambra, complete with guitar playing buskers to complete the evening.
So two weeks into our trip, it looks like Jean's organisation and planning has maintained the upper hand. So now, it's a 3 hr bus trip to Seville and more places to explore.
