15/12/09 - day 6.
good nights sleep despite the fear of creepy crawlies coming into the room as it´s all very exposed with large gaps between the ´walls´ and roof. plus the scottish woman next door found a lizzard (which i later found out was a gecko) under her pillow. cue thorough shaking of all bedding. got up around half 8, shower, breakfast (egg and bread), then onto the boat to another island for the day. today it was myself, the scots and another couple - a czech geezer and a spanish bird. they had just done the reverse of my trip - guatemala to panama - and were full of recommendations and suggestions for me which was good.
we went to isla perro (dog island). there were no dogs there, though it did have a ship wreck. the island were pretty nice though, it had a little hut for buying drinks and Molas, which are these hand stitched cloth things that the kuna people are (in?)famous for making. not wanting to snorkel at the shipwreck, i had a little poke around and then basically lay on the beach.
watching the scots snorkel was hilarious. steve had done it many times but it was his mum´s debut and you could tell she was wary of the water. by this i mean she wore a life jacket to go paddling. NO exaggeration! her son found this as funny as i did so i didne feel bad laughing. phrases like "swept out to sea" and "drowning" cropped up when she was 3 feet deep into the calmest of ripples all within touching distance of the shore. fortunately i was in sea as well thereby masking the fact i was wetting myself laughing.
the weather started to turn a little in the afternoon but i wasnt too fussed as i had had just about enough sun for the day. we had to pay a buck for using the island but when i went to get my wallet from my bag it was not there. panic stations. i hoped id left it in my room and it was an anxious wait to get back to find out. not helping matters was the fact that i spewed on the boat back to the island, sending lots of rice overboard for the fish. fortunately, wallet was in my other shorts pocket. had a shower and tried to shake off the sicky swayey feeling from the boat ride by wandering around the village for a bit. this helped and i was now feeling like a lie down which i duly had before dinner.
surprise, surprise, fish was for dinner (that was caught that day) and potatoes. i no longer felt sick and was starving so wolfed that down along with some rum that stecve had bought to share. the czech-spanish couple sat down with us after dinner - turned out he was a translator too and funds his travels using this. got to bed around 11pm and saw my 1st roach of central america in the shower. it wasnt massive but big enough to scare me! think the rum and cokes i had helped me nod off without too many roach concerns.
