India and Nepal 2022
So, where was I?
Oh yes, as I was saying, a spontaneous day emerged and it has been a memorable few hours.
Leaving Lumphini Park, the 'green lung' of the city, we walk up to Silom district where we hit upon an amazing exposition of Japanese culture including food, dance, music and costumes. Many of the Japanese here are dressed up in comic book costumes and it is a colourful and bizarre sight.
I think of my nephew Rob who has been teaching English in Japan now for a couple of years and enjoying the experience of living in Nagasaki.
We look in the Lonely Planet guide and decide that we must have a drink in a rooftop bar and notice that the Moon and Vertigo bars are on the 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel, which is within walking distance.
We we arrive just after 5pm and take the lift up to floor 59 and walk up on to the roof where a spectacular view greets us. It is truly fantastic to see the whole city including the Chao Praya river below.
We make an expensive drink last for an hour or so to watch the sun go down and the lights of the city come on. And so, a magical transformation of the view takes place and the experience of being up so high is sensational. I completely forget that I had abdominal surgery only a few days ago!
After a lovely Thai meal in a street a few blocks away, it is time to say goodbye to Aline and wish her well on the rest of her holiday. It's been a great few hours - dankeshaun, merci beaucoup, thankyou for the memories.
