India and Nepal 2022
The concept of 'pop-up' is not new here in Yangon.
A couple of months ago, a Buddhist shrine with platform and speakers and music appeared overnight at the end of my little lane. Monks recited teachings there all day and as quickly as it appeared, it was gone.
And now, within a few hours of work, a street market has appearecd. Among the first things I notice are fake fake football shirts at £1.20 each (the usual price of a genuine fake is £3.00!) There are also lots of toy machine guns, clothing, jewelry, selfie sticks, books, shoes and food items.
One stall is unexpected and is situated right outside the main entrance to my street. It's a mother with her two sons displaying two large python snakes. People make donations and the snake takes the money in its mouth. It's not something I particularly like but it adds a certain local atmosphere to the occasion.
The market coincides with the Buddhist festival in the area and there are plenty of flags and other adornments. I am getting so used to seeing monks walking in my neighborhood and I'm glad that their contribution to society is celebrated in this way
