We set up camp at Coronation Bay, again right on the beach. It's a National Park camp and only costs $14 a night. It is 25km north of Geraldton. From here we were able to explore the area. One of the must see things in Geraldton is the war memorial dedicated to HMAS Sydney 2. It sits at the top of the city and is a very emotional place visit. HMAS Sydney 2 served in the Second World War and survived quite a few battles. She had a crew of 645. On the 9th of November 1941 she was returning home to Australia when she encountered the German HSK Kormoran. In a fierce battle both ships were lost. HHAMS Sydney 2 was not discovered until 2008, 120 nautical miles of Steep Point on the WA coast. The dome of souls is made of 644 stainless steel seagulls and is quite spectacular. Each seagull represents a fallen crew member of HMAS Sydney 2. The 645th seagull is in the nearby round pool (the pool of remembrance). This pool shows a map of the coastline and the point where HMAS Sydney 2 rests is marked by the 645th seagull. All names of the crew lost at sea are engraved on the surrounding walls of the memorial. It is such a credit to Geraldton to honour the fallen souls in this way. Anyone visiting here will walk away with tears in their eyes.
