From Nanga Bay Holiday Resort we headed to a free camp on the beach around around 40km south of Carnarvon. On the way we stopped to view the world famous stromatolites. The stromatolites south of Denham give a glimpse into life 3,500 million years ago. They are still living and attract scientists and geologists from all over the world. They are the earliest record of life on earth. They were cool and great to see, but as my cousin Phil would say "they didn't float my boat". So we moved on and arrived at our free camp via a 6km corrugated road that nearly shook the cupboards off the caravan. We set up camp about 50 meters from the beach. I was kind of concerned as there was a cyclone here in March, however others were here so I figured it must be okay. We tried our luck at fishing again but I was using cockles, apparently I should have been using prawns for this area. This fishing business is just too complicated! The next day, Tuesday the 26th of May we headed into Carnarvon for a look around. We visited the information centre, shearer's hall of fame and the one mile jetty. Unfortunately we ran out of time to do the Carnavon Space & Technology Museum. The tracking station there was built to support NASA's Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs. In 2012 the museum was opened by Buzz Aldrin, (Apllo 11 astronaut). I think the Dubbo Dish and subsequent movie stole the glory of this tracking station as it was the last station to communicate with the space capsules leaving the earth orbit and the last to be in contact with them before splashdown. However and more importantly Mackayla decided she wanted to use her birthday money and get her ears pierced. So she did and was very happy with the result. One thing that I couldn't get over was the size of the new police station and court house complex. It rivals Ballarat's, and the town only has a population of 5,000. Just walking around town though does give you a glimpse into some of the social issues that exist here. After doing some shopping we headed back to our camp site for the evening. The plan is to have a relaxing day tomorrow, hopefully check out the Space Museum, before heading further north the following day.
