Today we went to the hospital and saw some patients with Dr. Likic in both the ER and on his ward. One even spoke really good english and we could ask him questions! Dr. Likic is a wealth of information and a great teacher! It works out that he is not on service this month so he has plenty of time to spend with us teaching us about croatia and some medical decision making. The hospital system is VERY different than back in the states. The hospital we are working at in Zagreb has about 30% more beds and 1/3 the staff of medical professionals! The entire internal medicine department, about 100 beds, and all admissions overnight are taken care of by ONE person, usually a resident! We think cross-cover of 30 patients is bad...wow.
Also, they do not have emergency medicine doctors and instead the internal medicine attendings take turns doing 24 hour shifts in the ER, overseeing the 2-3 residents working on all the patients; they see about 70 patients/24 hours. Dr. Likic will be doing his ER shift on Wednesday so we will get to spend some time with him in there and interacting with patients.
I have uploaded the pictures from zagreb (same ones as on this site) as well as istria (rovinj and the hilltowns), and Plitvice onto my facebook since it was much faster than using this site. Enjoy! http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=3008734&id=2202280&saved#!/album.php?fbid=10100586499781553&id=2202280&aid=3008734 (please let me know if the link doesnt work, it should work for everyone even if youre not on facebook, but if not I can send you an individual email via facebook)
