After a long day at the airport we finally made it to Sicily. We rented a car and I got lots of practice driving a manual over the next few days. We stayed in the old city of Siracusa called Ortigia. SO beautiful. Our hotel was right on the water a few meters from the castle. We did a day trip to Taormina, another town on the coast famed by its Mount Edna, an active volcanic mountain (couldnt see it the day we were there tho even tho it was sunny and clear...but we saw it at the airport later). We hiked down into the town from the top and wandered the city and went down to the beach via cable car and climbed the rocks. Some people were swimming and lots of people were laying out on the beach but we didnt have our swimsuits :(.
That night we had an amaaazing dinner at a little restaurant we found the night before, tucked into a little alley. I think we were the only non-locals there because everytime a new table came in they hugged and kissed the owner and often didnt order off the menu, food was just brought to them (we are pretty sure the couple next to us didnt even pay for their meal...)
Our last day in Sicily we walked around Ortigia and saw the old sites, a temple for apollo, many pretty churches, and the huge Duomo in the center of town. It was HUGE. we then drove to catania to a different hotel to be closer to the airport since my flight was at 7 am (and siracusa is an hour from the airport).
Now I am in the Roma airport about to leave for the states ;( All in all it was a wonderful trip and we both wished it wasnt over but are so so excited for everything to come so I guess its a good trade off!
I will post the rest of my pics when I get back to the states.
Love you all!
